Trump Caught Napping During White House Event, And Gavin Newsom Has The Perfect Troll (Video)

During a White House event, President Donald Trump seemed to get very sleepy while Dr. Mehmet Oz gave a long talk about how Americans need to lose weight. Most people can understand dozing off during one of Dr. Oz’s lectures, but this moment was different — Oz was speaking in his official role as the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the setting was the Oval Office. Falling asleep there, in front of reporters, was not a great look for the president.

California Governor Gavin Newsom didn’t miss the chance to tease Trump about it. On Thursday, Trump was caught on camera several times with his eyes closed while his administration announced new lower prices for certain weight-loss drugs for Medicare and Medicaid patients. In video footage from CSPAN, he appears to be fighting sleep about 25 minutes into the event as Dr. Oz continues his speech about obesity.

Getty photographer Andrew Harnik even captured a clear shot of Trump with his eyes fully shut, seemingly asleep. Several other photos showed him either dozing off or struggling to stay awake.

After the images began spreading online, Newsom’s press office jumped in with a post on social media, bringing back an old nickname he’s used for Trump before: “DOZY DON IS BACK!” The post included one of the photos and a clip from the event.

The nickname is a playful twist on Trump’s old label for Joe Biden — “Sleepy Joe.” Social media users have used similar terms like “Sleepy Don” in the past, such as when Trump was caught nodding off during a roundtable on antifa last month or appearing drowsy during another event with Dr. Oz earlier in the summer.

To make matters worse, not long after Trump seemed to fall asleep during Oz’s speech, a man in the audience fainted. Trump’s reaction, caught on camera, made it even more obvious how out of it he appeared at the time. According to the White House press secretary, the man who fainted was fine and represented one of the health care companies at the meeting.

The entire scene — the president nodding off, the awkward reaction to the fainting guest, and Newsom’s public jab — quickly spread across social media, becoming yet another viral moment from the Trump White House.
