‘Are you stupid?’ Expert says Donald Trump DOJ just ‘antagonized’ Supreme Court at a crucial time

The host asked Millhiser what effect a statement like that from the head of the Federal Reserve could have, even though there is no Supreme Court case directly involving the Fed chair. He wanted to know how it might influence the ongoing case involving Lisa Cook.

Millhiser replied that, in his view, the situation with Jerome Powell is basically the same as what happened with Lisa Cook. He was referring to a lawsuit connected to Donald Trump and his attempt in 2025 to remove Cook from her position. According to Millhiser, in both situations Trump appeared to be inventing or searching for a fake excuse to interfere with the independence of the Federal Reserve, which is supposed to operate without political pressure.

He said he was especially shocked by the timing of the investigation involving Powell. From what he could see, it might technically be a coincidence that the United States Department of Justice issued subpoenas just about two weeks before the Supreme Court of the United States was scheduled to hear a major case related to the Fed. Still, he questioned how anyone could think that was a good idea.

Millhiser expressed disbelief that officials would move in a way that could clearly annoy or provoke the Supreme Court right before such an important hearing. He suggested that taking such action at that moment makes it look obvious that something suspicious or improper could be going on. In his view, the timing alone raises red flags and makes the situation seem careless at best, or deliberately troubling at worst.
