Vice President JD Vance announced on Monday night that he has sent a criminal referral to the U.S. Department of Justice, asking federal investigators to look into allegations of fraud involving Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and the state’s Attorney General, Keith Ellison.
In a statement shared on social media, Vance said he believes the claims deserve a full investigation. He stated that no public official should be treated as if they are above the law. According to Vance, if any state officials helped fraud take place, gave false information under oath, or tried to pressure, intimidate, or silence whistleblowers, they should be held accountable and face legal consequences.
The referral marks one of the first major actions taken by Vance since President Donald Trump appointed him to oversee efforts aimed at tackling fraud and government waste. In this role, often referred to as a “fraud czar,” Vance has been tasked with helping identify and investigate suspected cases of fraud across different levels of government.
The Trump administration has made fighting fraud a major priority during its second term. Officials have repeatedly said they want to crack down on any misuse of taxpayer money and increase oversight of government-funded programs.
The issue gained even more attention recently following a controversial investigation conducted by social media personality Nick Shirley. His investigation focused on Somali-run daycare centers in Minnesota and raised questions about how public funds were being used. The findings sparked intense debate online and increased pressure on authorities to examine whether fraud had occurred.
At this stage, Vance’s referral does not mean that anyone has been charged with a crime. It simply means that he is asking the Department of Justice to review the allegations and determine whether there is enough evidence to open a formal criminal investigation. Federal investigators will now decide what steps, if any, should be taken next.
Supporters of the referral argue that all allegations of fraud should be thoroughly investigated regardless of who is involved. Critics, however, have questioned the timing and motivation behind the move, suggesting it could become another flashpoint in the ongoing political battles between Republicans and Democrats.
