All of Pope Leo’s comments about Trump policies as he’s inaugurated as 267th pope

The new pope, Leo XIV, is already making waves—not just for being the first-ever American pope, but also for speaking out clearly on political issues, especially when it comes to Donald Trump’s policies.

Born in Chicago as Robert Francis Prevost, Pope Leo was officially inaugurated on May 18. Even before he officially became pope, he was known for his strong moral views and active social media presence. Just like his predecessor, Pope Francis, Pope Leo hasn’t been afraid to talk about politics and social justice.

In his first public blessing as pope from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, he made strong calls for peace. He asked for an end to war, specifically calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, peace in Ukraine, and support for humanitarian aid. But his focus isn’t just on global politics—he’s also been very vocal about problems he sees in the U.S., especially with Trump.

Over the years, Pope Leo has shared several posts on social media that criticize Trump’s policies. He’s highlighted tweets and articles from other Catholic leaders and writers who called Trump’s actions un-Christian, especially when it came to immigration and refugee bans.

Back in 2018, he shared a post that slammed Trump’s policy of separating children from their families at the border. The post said there was nothing Christian or American about putting kids in cages, and called it shameful.

Even before that, in 2015, he shared an article written by another church leader criticizing Trump’s harsh anti-immigrant language. And during Trump’s presidency, Pope Leo continued to amplify voices calling out actions like mass deportations, refugee bans, and racist rhetoric.

One especially emotional post he shared was of a Syrian child, injured and covered in blood, with a priest’s comment asking how America could turn its back on people like this. The message was simple and sad: this isn’t who we should be.

He’s even taken aim at Trump’s current vice president, JD Vance. Earlier this year, Vance said on TV that we should prioritize Americans over people in other countries. Pope Leo shared an article that said Jesus didn’t teach us to rank our love that way. The message was clear: Christianity is about loving everyone, not just the people closest to you.

Trump, on his part, hasn’t said anything negative about Pope Leo. In fact, he congratulated him on Truth Social and said it was a great honor for the U.S. to have its first pope. When asked if he would talk to the pope about immigration, Trump said yes, and admitted Pope Leo was a “surprise choice.”

Now that Pope Leo is officially in charge, it’s clear he’s going to keep speaking out. He isn’t staying quiet on things he believes are wrong, whether they’re happening in America or anywhere else. And even though he’s now the head of the Catholic Church, it doesn’t look like he’s planning to stop using his platform to call for compassion, peace, and justice.
