An Ex-GOP Official Just Did The Unthinkable — And Trump Won’t Be Happy

Geoff Duncan, the former Republican lieutenant governor of Georgia, has officially left the GOP and joined the Democratic Party. He shared his decision in an op-ed titled “From Republican Lt. Governor to Democrat: Loving My Neighbor Is Easier Now”, published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Duncan explained that his choice wasn’t sudden or tied to a specific date. Instead, it was something that developed over time, beginning well before Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. He said his main struggle as a Republican was trying to live out his Christian values—especially the idea of loving your neighbor.

He pointed out that recent Republican policies, such as cutting food assistance and reducing Medicaid funding, didn’t align with his beliefs. He emphasized that truly caring for others isn’t always convenient or cheap, but it’s the right thing to do.

Duncan also criticized Republican approaches to immigration. He described harsh tactics, like raiding the homes of undocumented but otherwise law-abiding families, as both cruel and ineffective. In his view, these actions do more harm than good and are more about creating viral moments than solving real problems.

Despite expecting backlash from some Republicans, Duncan said he’s been warmly welcomed by Democrats. He’s even open to the idea of running for office again. He mentioned that people from across the political spectrum—including some Republicans—have been encouraging him to consider returning to public service.

In the end, Duncan made it clear that his decision was about staying true to his faith and values. He said if Georgia voters want a leader who will focus on unity, practical solutions, and meaningful change, he’d be willing to step up again.
