Donald Trump made headlines again after he complimented a female reporter during an official event at the White House despite saying he probably shouldn’t.
The moment took place during a peace agreement ceremony between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. The U.S. helped organize the event, which aimed to bring an end to long-standing conflict in eastern Congo. Many important people were present, including officials from both African countries and U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
During the ceremony, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt had invited Angolan journalist Hariana Verás to attend. Verás is based in the U.S. and covers political events, including at the White House.
At one point, Trump turned his attention to Verás and made a remark about her looks, even though, according to him, Leavitt had warned him not to do so. He said, “Karoline told me I shouldn’t say this because it’s politically incorrect,” then proceeded to call the reporter “beautiful.” He went on to say, “You’re beautiful inside too. I wish more reporters were like you.” He laughed and added, “That might be the end of my political career.”
Verás smiled at the compliment while some people in the room laughed. But the moment quickly went viral on social media, and reactions were mixed.
Some people found it awkward and cringeworthy. One Reddit user joked that Trump came off like an out-of-touch grandfather talking to a young waitress. Another criticized him for focusing only on a woman’s appearance, suggesting that he tends to judge women solely by how they look and doesn’t recognize their intelligence or work.
Others said Trump should’ve just kept his thoughts to himself, pointing out that not every opinion needs to be shared—especially in a formal, professional setting. One person noted that manners involve knowing when not to speak.
Another user called out JD Vance for not reacting, saying he looked like he thought the comment was cute or normal when it wasn’t.
People on X (formerly Twitter) also shared their opinions. Some felt Trump’s words showed a lack of respect for women in the workplace and added to a culture that makes it harder for women to be taken seriously. One commenter said this kind of behavior keeps reinforcing the idea that a woman’s worth is tied to her looks, even when she’s doing a professional job.
At the same time, a few others didn’t see anything wrong with Trump’s comment. One person asked, “Since when is it bad to say someone is beautiful?” Another admitted the comment was odd but also complimented the reporter’s outfit.
Overall, while some found the moment flattering or harmless, many saw it as inappropriate and reflective of deeper issues with how women are treated in professional environments.
