Donald Trump used an offensive and outdated term while talking about his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
During a press conference, he claimed that Kim had said negative things about former U.S. president Joe Biden, including calling him “mentally retarded,” and he repeated that phrase more than once.
Trump seemed to use this as a way to defend himself, suggesting that while Kim may have been harsh toward Biden, he had spoken positively about him.
However, there’s no clear evidence that Kim Jong Un ever used those exact words about Biden. Back in 2019, North Korean state media did insult Biden, but they used different terms like “fool” and “low IQ,” after Biden criticized Kim and called him a tyrant.
At the same time, Trump himself has also been insulted by North Korea in the past—they once referred to him as a “dotard,” which is an old word used to describe someone as weak, slow, or mentally declining due to age.
Although Trump has often talked about having a good personal relationship with Kim, that relationship has not always been stable and has faced tensions over time, especially after changes in leadership and global events.
These comments came during a longer and somewhat unfocused speech, where Trump also complained about international issues, including trade and conflicts in the Middle East.
Critics say moments like this raise concerns about his ability to stay on topic and communicate clearly, especially when serious global matters are being discussed. Others also point out that using insulting or inappropriate language, particularly about mental health or disabilities, can be harmful and disrespectful.
