A petition calling for the impeachment of Donald Trump has been growing quickly, showing how divided people are about his leadership. What started with just over 100,000 signatures has now nearly doubled, reaching close to 200,000 supporters in a short period of time.
The petition was created in December 2025 by a grassroots group called Blackout the System. The group says they are not tied to any political party, and they claim their goal is to hold leaders accountable. In the petition, they accuse Trump’s administration of allowing greed, corruption, and a lack of accountability to spread. They also claim that the Constitution has been violated multiple times since he returned to office.
As more people signed the petition, it began to attract attention online and in the media. Supporters say it reflects growing frustration among some Americans who are unhappy with certain policies and decisions. They point to issues like immigration, healthcare, education, and the economy, arguing that these areas have been negatively affected.
However, it’s important to understand that even though the petition is growing, it does not force the government to take action. In the past, there was an official White House petition system where reaching 100,000 signatures could trigger a response. But that system is no longer active, so this petition is mostly symbolic. It shows public opinion, but it does not directly lead to impeachment.
Impeachment itself is a political process that must start in Congress. The House of Representatives would need to vote to impeach the president, and then the Senate would hold a trial to decide whether to remove him from office. Right now, Republicans control both chambers of Congress, which makes it very unlikely for impeachment to move forward, regardless of how many people sign an online petition.
This is not the first time Trump has faced impeachment. During his first time as president, he was impeached twice. The first was in 2019 over allegations that he pressured Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate political rival Joe Biden while holding back military aid. The second impeachment came in 2021 after the January 6 Capitol attack, where he was accused of encouraging supporters to disrupt the certification of the election results. In both cases, he was acquitted by the Senate, meaning he was not removed from office.
Because of this history, Trump remains the only U.S. president to be impeached twice. Now, this new petition is raising the idea of a third impeachment, although that would still require strong political support in Congress, which currently does not exist.
The White House has pushed back strongly against the petition. A spokesperson dismissed it, saying that millions of Americans voted for Trump and that the number of people signing the petition is very small compared to that. They also suggested that critics are simply expressing political disagreement rather than raising valid concerns.
This situation shows how divided the country is right now. On one side, there are people who believe strong action should be taken against the president. On the other side, there are those who believe the criticism is exaggerated or politically motivated.
In simple terms, the petition is a way for people to express their frustration and call for change. But in reality, it does not have the power to remove a president. That decision still lies with Congress, and without enough political support, it is unlikely to happen.
Even so, the rapid growth of the petition shows that public opinion is active and engaged. Whether or not it leads to real action, it highlights the ongoing debates, tensions, and strong feelings surrounding Trump’s presidency.
