Donald Trump pushes for Jack Smith to be put in prison in midnight posting spree: ‘Lock him up’

President Donald Trump stirred controversy again after sharing several late-night social media posts that openly called for some of his political opponents to be sent to prison. The posts appeared on his Truth Social account during the early hours of the morning, drawing attention because of their strong language and the timing of the messages.

The situation comes shortly after FBI Director Kash Patel reportedly dismissed ten additional FBI agents who had previously worked on the investigation into classified documents discovered at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence. Those firings followed a major legal decision by federal Judge Aileen Cannon, who permanently blocked the public release of a report prepared by former special counsel Jack Smith. The report had summarized the investigation into Trump’s handling of sensitive government documents.

Not long after that ruling, Trump reposted comments from one of his online allies demanding that Smith himself face prosecution. The original post, written by a popular social media user named Mila Joy, argued that Democrats had unfairly targeted Trump and people connected to him. The post claimed that law enforcement had gone after the former president, his lawyers, campaign staff, accountants, media supporters, and even his personal valet over accusations the writer described as fabricated. The message ended with a direct call for Smith to be punished, saying he should be held accountable so similar investigations would not happen again.

Trump reshared a screenshot of that message on Truth Social at around 1:41 a.m. Eastern Time, nearly half a day after it first appeared online. Just one minute earlier, he had boosted another supporter’s post carrying a similar tone. That second message, shared by an account known as RandallCA, declared that certain individuals should be in prison and included an electoral map from the 2020 presidential election. The post suggested that several states had been improperly taken from Trump, repeating claims about election wrongdoing that have remained central to his political messaging.

In recent weeks, Trump has also publicly urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to open an investigation into Jack Smith. The president has repeatedly attacked the former special counsel personally, using harsh language while questioning the legitimacy of the investigations Smith led. Smith previously testified before Congress about his work examining both the classified documents case and allegations connected to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Neither investigation ever reached a courtroom trial before Trump won reelection in 2024, but the political and legal battles surrounding them continue to shape the national conversation. Trump’s decision to amplify posts calling for jail time for his critics has added another layer to an already tense political climate, with supporters viewing his actions as fighting back against unfair treatment while critics warn that such rhetoric risks deepening divisions and undermining trust in legal institutions.
