A new poll from Rasmussen Reports, which leans conservative, shows that former President Donald Trump’s approval rating has gone up. One of the company’s lead pollsters called the results “stunning.” According to their latest numbers, Trump has a 53% approval rating, and half of Americans think the country is heading in the right direction. These numbers are surprising to many, especially since public opinion on Trump has often been split.
The head pollster at Rasmussen, Mark Mitchell, said that the increase in how many people believe the country is on the right path is what surprised him the most. He pointed out that this is the first time in 20 years of polling that a majority of people in their survey said the U.S. is on the right track. He called it a record-breaking moment.
Trump’s support has been up and down in recent months. In April, 47% approved of how he was doing, while 51% did not. Back in February, for the first time ever in Rasmussen’s polls, more Americans said the country was doing well than not. In March, that number dipped again.
Other polls from different companies also show mixed results. A Big Data poll earlier in May gave Trump a small lead with 48% approval and 47.4% disapproval. Another poll done by RMG Research found that 48% supported him and 50% did not. That survey included 3,000 registered voters and had a margin of error of around 1.8 points.
On a podcast called *The Benny Show*, Mitchell expressed surprise at the positive shift in public opinion, especially regarding the direction of the country. He said it’s something they’ve never seen before in their polling.
Trump also took to Truth Social to celebrate the poll results. He posted a message saying that together with the people, he will make America bigger, better, stronger, wealthier, healthier, and more religious than ever before.
These poll numbers matter because they give a snapshot of how Americans feel about Trump’s leadership and the country’s future. With the 2026 midterm elections coming up, how people view Trump could play a big role in which party gains power.
Overall, while Trump’s popularity still shifts from month to month, this recent bump in approval is getting a lot of attention. Whether it lasts will depend on what happens next in the political world.
