Elon Musk makes unexpected move as Trump’s ‘big beautiful bill’ is given the green light by Congress

Elon Musk has spoken out strongly against a new bill supported by Donald Trump that recently passed through Congress. While the two men have had a complicated relationship—once appearing to support each other—they now seem to be firmly on opposite sides when it comes to this piece of legislation.

The bill, which Trump has repeatedly described as his “big, beautiful bill,” passed the House of Representatives on July 3 by a very narrow vote of 218 to 214. It includes tax cuts that Trump had promised during his 2024 campaign, but it also makes significant cuts to public programs, including Medicaid—a health program that helps millions of lower-income Americans. According to official estimates, the bill could leave nearly 12 million people without health insurance and increase the national debt by \$3.4 trillion over the next decade.

Elon Musk, once an adviser to Trump and a known supporter in the past, has called this bill “utterly insane and destructive.” Even before it passed, Musk warned that the plan would hurt the U.S. economy. He said it would lead to the loss of millions of jobs and cause serious harm to the country in the long run. In his view, the bill gives financial support to outdated industries while doing damage to emerging sectors that are shaping the future. Musk didn’t hold back, calling the bill a form of political suicide for the Republican Party.

After Congress approved the bill, Musk went online again, using his platform X (formerly Twitter) to criticize members of Congress who had voted for it. He said that lawmakers who had campaigned on promises to cut government spending but then supported this bill—which increases the national debt—should be ashamed. He even promised to personally work to unseat them in upcoming elections, stating: “They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”

One of the few Republicans who voted against the bill was Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky. After the vote, former Congressman Justin Amash asked Musk to back Massie in his fight for re-election, saying Massie was being targeted by establishment Republicans because he refuses to fall in line and votes based on principle. Musk quickly responded, saying he would support Massie, and even confirmed he was donating to his campaign.

Massie has a history of going against the grain, even within his own party. He has challenged Trump in the past, such as when he criticized the president’s military actions against Iran as unconstitutional. Trump, in turn, has attacked Massie, calling him a “pathetic loser” and saying he would work hard to campaign against him in the next Republican primary.

Now, with Elon Musk’s backing, Massie may have a stronger chance at defending his seat in Congress. Massie praised Musk’s influence and said that his control of the X platform has helped him bypass traditional media and speak directly to the public. He said Musk’s support allows him to continue pushing for transparency in government and to resist pressure from both political parties.

Massie framed the upcoming election not just as a vote about the bill or war powers, but as a larger question: should members of Congress vote independently for what they believe is right, or should they simply follow party lines and listen to special interest groups? He said that having Musk in his corner makes it easier for him to stay independent and fight for his constituents.

Meanwhile, Trump is expected to officially sign the bill into law on July 4 during a patriotic event featuring a military flyover at the White House. He told reporters that fighter jets would fly overhead as he signs the bill, turning the moment into a political and symbolic celebration of what he sees as a major win.

So, while Trump is celebrating, Elon Musk is publicly turning against him, calling out the damage he believes the bill will do, and putting his money and influence behind a Republican lawmaker who dared to stand alone. This moment marks a new stage in their rocky relationship and shows the deep divisions within the Republican Party heading into the next election.
