Eric Trump, son of former President Donald Trump, sparked outrage after insulting protesters in Los Angeles by using a highly offensive and outdated slur. While speaking with conservative commentator Benny Johnson, Eric referred to the protesters as “mongoloids,” a term historically used to demean people with Down syndrome and one rooted in racist classifications of people with Asian features. His comments were quickly condemned online.
He was criticizing protests against recent immigration raids in Los Angeles, where demonstrators have clashed with police in some areas. According to reports, a few protesters threw objects like rocks and scooters at law enforcement vehicles and tried to set police cars on fire. Eric Trump focused on this violence, saying police cars were “ravaged,” and used the slur to describe the people involved.
Social media users quickly reacted, calling his language cruel, offensive, and unacceptable—especially given the term’s history. Some commenters noted the hypocrisy of Eric Trump’s outrage, since his father has shown support for the January 6 Capitol rioters, many of whom attacked police officers. Others said the use of such a slur shows a deeper lack of empathy and understanding.
One person on X (formerly Twitter) pointed out that calling people “mongoloids” is not just outdated—it’s deeply hurtful and discriminatory, especially toward people with disabilities. They urged others to understand the word’s background before excusing its use.
The protests in Los Angeles began in response to a new wave of immigration enforcement. Last week, Donald Trump ordered around 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to the city. About 200 Marines have already arrived to guard federal buildings and personnel.
Although there have been reports of some violent incidents during the demonstrations, many have remained peaceful. Critics argue that using heavy military force and offensive language against protestors does more to inflame tensions than to resolve them.
