Donald Trump has once again sparked controversy with his latest outburst — this time aimed at late-night comedian Seth Meyers. On Saturday, Trump accused the NBC host of “probably” breaking the law simply for making jokes about him, prompting a strong warning from a U.S. senator.
Over the weekend, Trump took to social media to lash out at Meyers, calling him “the least talented person to ever perform live in the history of television.” The former president said he had recently watched Meyers’ show for the first time in years and was furious about what he saw.
“He talked endlessly about electric catapults on aircraft carriers,” Trump complained, referring to a topic he’s criticized before. “I’ve said those are not as good as the cheaper steam catapults. On and on he went — a truly deranged lunatic,” Trump wrote. He didn’t stop there. “NO TALENT, NO RATINGS, 100% ANTI-TRUMP, WHICH IS PROBABLY ILLEGAL!!!” he added in all caps.
His comment quickly drew attention, not just for its anger, but for what it revealed about his mindset. Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat known for speaking out against Trump, responded by warning Americans to take the former president’s words seriously.
“You need to understand that he actually believes it’s illegal to criticize him,” Murphy said. “Why? Because Trump thinks he, not the people, decides what the law is.”
Murphy went on to say that this attitude is a dangerous sign of authoritarian behavior. “This is why we’re not on the verge of a totalitarian takeover — we’re already in the middle of one,” he warned.
The exchange highlights a growing concern among critics that Trump’s repeated attacks on journalists, comedians, and public figures who mock him are part of a larger effort to intimidate dissent and control public speech. What might seem like just another angry rant, they argue, reveals how far he’s willing to go to silence criticism and bend democratic norms to his will.
