Illegal hoax’: Trump signals next DOJ target with comment about his impeachment

Former President Donald Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday to accuse California Senator Adam Schiff of breaking multiple laws during Trump’s first impeachment in 2019.

Trump didn’t provide any specific evidence, but he strongly implied that Schiff acted illegally and should be investigated. He urged various authorities—including Congress—to take a closer look at Schiff’s actions, suggesting that what happened during that impeachment was a serious abuse of power.

This public accusation came just after news broke that New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey had been indicted—though those indictments have not been officially confirmed or verified at the time of Trump’s comments.

Building on that moment, Trump appeared to signal that Schiff might be the next person he wants legal authorities to focus on. By naming Schiff directly, Trump seemed to be escalating his long-running feud with the senator, who played a central role in leading the first impeachment trial as the then-chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

Trump called the impeachment over his Ukraine dealings a much bigger and more corrupt scandal than Watergate, the infamous political scandal that brought down President Richard Nixon in the 1970s.

He described it as an “illegal hoax” and claimed it was filled with misconduct and dishonesty. Using his usual style, Trump attacked Schiff’s character, referring to him with the nickname “Schiffty” and accusing him of being deeply corrupt.

In his post, Trump wrote that “so many laws, and protocols, were violated, and just plain broken,” expressing outrage and insisting that some form of legal accountability should follow.

He concluded the message with a signature identifying himself as “President DJT,” reinforcing his belief that the investigations and political attacks against him were unfair and possibly criminal on the part of his opponents.

Trump has frequently targeted Schiff over the years, accusing him of lying and manipulating facts during the impeachment process, especially related to Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s president, which triggered the investigation.

However, despite his repeated claims, there has been no legal ruling or official conclusion that Schiff broke any laws in relation to the impeachment proceedings. Trump’s latest comments continue a pattern of using social media to call out political rivals and push for investigations without presenting verified evidence.
