Kansas City Chiefs owner’s family loses 9-year-old girl in Texas flood as they release heartbreaking statement

A terrible flood in Texas has taken the lives of many people, including young girls and staff members from a summer camp called Camp Mystic. One of those who died was 9-year-old Janie Hunt, a relative of the Kansas City Chiefs football team’s owner, Clark Hunt.

Janie was one of 27 girls and camp staff confirmed to have died after heavy rains caused the Guadalupe River in central Texas to overflow. The floodwaters rushed through Kerr County, catching many off guard. Officials have reported that 82 people have died so far, and many others are still missing. Rescue teams are still searching, and they fear the number of lives lost may grow.

Camp Mystic is a Christian summer camp for girls that’s been around since 1926. It’s meant to help young girls gain confidence and independence. About 750 girls were at the camp when the flood hit. As of now, 10 girls and one staff member are still unaccounted for.

Janie Hunt’s death has deeply saddened her family. Her mother told CNN that they are devastated. Tavia Hunt, the wife of Clark Hunt, posted on Instagram about their heartbreak, mentioning how painful it is to lose someone so young and asking how people are supposed to understand or trust in a good and powerful God during such tragic times. She shared that they are grieving not just for Janie, but also for the other young girls who died  including daughters of close friends.

Other children who died in the flood include 8-year-olds Renee Smajstrla, Sarah Marsha, and Eloise Peck, along with 9-year-old Lila Bonner. Lila’s family spoke briefly to the media, asking for privacy while they mourn. They said their hearts are broken and they are praying for others still missing.

This flood has left many families in shock and mourning, especially those connected to the Camp Mystic community. It’s a tragedy that has shaken not just the people of Texas but many others who are watching with heavy hearts.
