Keir Starmer defies King Charles’s major concern

Keir Starmer has decided to move up President Donald Trump’s official state visit to the UK, even though King Charles had reservations. The visit is now expected to happen in September. Originally, the King preferred a more informal meeting and had concerns, especially with Trump repeatedly suggesting that Canada could become the 51st state of the U.S.

Instead of a low-key visit, Starmer is pushing for a full ceremonial welcome, which reportedly appeals to Trump due to his interest in the Royal Family. According to The Times, the official paperwork required for a state visit, known as the manu regia, has already been sent to the White House.

However, this move has caused some tension. A senior Palace aide reportedly told government officials that the King didn’t want to host Trump while he was publicly questioning Canada’s independence, saying it could be seen as a challenge to the King’s role and authority in the Commonwealth.

The King had hoped the visit would be delayed until later in Trump’s second term, to allow time for the situation to cool down. Reports also say that Starmer has not confirmed whether he asked Trump in private to tone down his statements about Canada.

Despite the behind-the-scenes concerns, a Palace official said the King and Trump have known each other for many years, and His Majesty is looking forward to hosting the U.S. President and First Lady later this year.

Trump last had a state visit to the UK in 2019. Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has publicly expressed his displeasure over Britain’s decision to invite Trump again, especially while tensions about Canadian sovereignty are ongoing.

During a recent speech in Ottawa, King Charles appeared to send a subtle message in response to Trump’s comments by referencing Canada’s national anthem, saying, “The True North is indeed strong and free.”

Even though rumors suggest there may be a disagreement between Buckingham Palace and Downing Street, a Palace insider clarified that all state visits happen based on advice from the UK government.

Meanwhile, Prince Edward is scheduled to visit Canada from June 25 to July 2, with stops in Prince Edward Island, Toronto, and Ottawa.
