Looks Like Donald Trump Might Not Be Able To Get Rid Of Thomas Massie

Ed Gallrein entering the race is a new test of whether support from Donald Trump is still enough to guarantee a win in a Republican primary.

Gallrein, who used to serve as a Navy SEAL, launched his challenge against Thomas Massie last year with Trump’s endorsement and backing from political groups that support Trump. In the past, this kind of support has been powerful enough to push out Republicans who went against Trump. Politicians like Liz Cheney, Peter Meijer, and Tom Rice all lost their primaries after voting to impeach him.

However, with about a month left before the election, it’s not certain that Trump’s backing will be enough this time. Recent polls suggest that Massie still has a real chance of holding onto his seat, even with Trump opposing him.

One poll by Quantus Insights shows Massie leading with 46.8%, compared to 37.7% for Gallrein. Another poll by Big Data Poll shows Massie with 52.4% support, while Gallrein has 47.6%. These numbers suggest Massie could become one of the few Republicans to survive political pressure from Trump.

Massie himself seems confident. He has challenged Gallrein to a debate, believing it would highlight weaknesses in his opponent. So far, Gallrein has not accepted. Massie said he is ready to debate because he understands his own views clearly, while he claims Gallrein does not have strong policy positions and is simply promising to follow whatever Trump and Mike Johnson want.

The key question in this race is whether Republican voters in northern Kentucky will prioritize Trump’s endorsement above everything else, or whether they value Massie’s independent approach.

Massie is known for being strongly conservative, sometimes even more than his colleagues. He has voted against certain tax cuts and spending plans supported by Trump, mainly because they increase government debt. He has also pushed for the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein and voted against some military actions. These actions made him a target for Trump, who then supported Gallrein.

At a rally, Trump even said he just needed “somebody” to defeat Massie, though he also praised Gallrein’s intelligence and personality.

Massie has beaten a Trump-backed challenger before, but this race is still tough. Groups supporting Trump have spent millions on ads against him. For example, the Republican Jewish Committee alone has spent over $3 million.

Gallrein has tried to criticize Massie by calling him “the Liz Cheney of Kentucky,” comparing him to Cheney, who lost her seat after opposing Trump. However, unlike Cheney, Massie is performing much better in polls. Before her loss in 2022, Cheney was trailing by more than 20 points.

Gallrein is not without experience. He has served in the military for many years, works as a farmer, and previously ran for a state senate seat in 2024, though he lost. Still, he is seen as less experienced in public speaking compared to Massie, who has spent over a decade in Congress and regularly debates top officials.

Gallrein’s campaign strategy seems to rely more on media and advertising rather than direct voter contact. Only a small percentage of voters said they had been personally contacted by his campaign, while many more said Massie’s team had reached out to them. Some experts believe Gallrein may be relying on a simple message: if voters support Trump, they should support him too.

Meanwhile, Massie believes debates are important so voters can see more than just short campaign ads. He argues that people deserve to hear directly from both candidates before making a decision.

Gallrein has said his main reason for running is to support Trump in Congress. He has talked about visiting the White House and said Trump was impressed by him. He also criticized Massie for not working as part of the team, claiming that Massie often opposes both Trump and the party.

When asked about debating Massie during a radio interview with Bill Cunningham, Gallrein seemed unsure and said he had many other things to focus on but might consider it later.

Massie claims Gallrein has already avoided several debate opportunities. He argues that since so much money is being spent on the race, voters should at least get the chance to see both candidates debate face to face.
