‘Much worse situation than we ever were in Watergate’ as Trump runs wild: historian

A well-known historian recently warned that the situation under former President Donald Trump was even more dangerous than what the United States faced during the Watergate scandal in the 1970s. Garrett Graff, who writes the Doomsday Scenario newsletter, spoke with Emma Vigeland on “The Majority Report” about how Trump’s actions were pushing the country toward a form of government where one person has too much control.

Graff said Trump was abusing his power very quickly, pointing to examples like sending federal troops into cities across the country. He believes these actions have deeply changed the United States in a negative way. Vigeland asked him to explain how Trump’s time in office compared to President Richard Nixon’s during Watergate, and Graff said the current situation was far worse.

He explained that during Watergate, many Republican leaders still put the U.S. Constitution above loyalty to the president. But in recent years, that sense of responsibility has weakened. According to Graff, today’s Republican Party has largely supported Trump’s actions instead of stopping them.

He said Congress has ignored times when Trump acted as if the law didn’t apply to him, and that the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice John Roberts, has made decisions that give Trump even more freedom to act without facing consequences, even for potentially illegal behavior.
