Donald Trump’s first 100 days back in the White House have been packed with big moves — from signing lots of executive orders to trying to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia, and even suggesting that Canada should become the 51st state. But one of the most controversial things he’s focused on is his crackdown on illegal immigration.
Trump’s administration has been arresting and deporting many people living illegally in the U.S., some well-known and others not. To show off what they’ve been doing, Trump’s team has now turned part of the White House lawn into a public display.
The lawn features rows of signs, each showing a mugshot-style photo of someone arrested, the crime they’re accused of — like sexual assault or murder — and the official White House logo at the bottom.
Kaelan Dorr, a Deputy Assistant to the President, posted a photo of the display online, joking that “yard signs win elections” and showing off how different the lawn looked.
While some of Trump’s supporters praised the move as a strong stand against crime, a lot of people online were furious. Many pointed out that the display must have cost a lot of taxpayer money and slammed it as a waste. Others went even further, calling it “propaganda” and “disgusting.”
One common question critics asked was: how much did this spectacle cost Americans? They argued that there were better ways to spend government money, especially during tough economic times.
The lawn stunt also came after Trump said in a Fox Noticias interview that he wants to offer people living illegally in the U.S. a deal — some cash and a plane ticket to leave. He added that if they were considered “good” and the government wanted them back, they’d work to bring them in legally later on.
Overall, while Trump’s new approach is winning him points with parts of his base, it’s also sparking major backlash and raising big questions about how far he’s willing to go to push his immigration policies.
