A Republican lawmaker has called for Lindsey Graham to lose his access to the Oval Office, saying he has too much influence over Donald Trump.
Kat Cammack said she believes Graham should not be allowed to speak with the president as freely as he does now, and that his Oval Office privileges should be taken away.
It is still not clear if that will actually happen, but many believe Graham has been playing a major role in shaping Trump’s decisions, especially on military issues.
Some Democrats, along with a few Republicans, are worried about how aggressive his views have been. They point to his support for military action in Iran, his comparison of the situation to Battle of Iwo Jima, his backing of efforts to capture former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, and his calls for regime change in Cuba.
What makes it more surprising is that Graham once openly criticized Trump in the past, even using harsh words against him. But over time, he became one of Trump’s closest allies during his second term.
Now, he is seen as one of the key figures encouraging Trump to take strong military action against Iran. He said he had been discussing this idea with Trump long before he took office, arguing that Iran is a major threat to peace in the Middle East.
He even told Trump that bringing down Iran’s leadership would be as significant as the fall of the Berlin Wall. Graham also said there was strong disagreement inside the government, with some people wanting to avoid involvement or let Israel act alone.
But he explained that he kept pushing the idea, telling Trump he should take a leading role and show that America is ready to act. According to him, Trump can be difficult to convince, but once he agrees with something, he fully commits to it.
