Shocking reason man who was deported to ‘world’s worst prison’ due to ‘Trump admin error’ will stay in jail

Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a 29-year-old man, was wrongly deported to El Salvador and sent to one of the world’s most notorious prisons, known as the Center for Terrorism Confinement (CECOT).
This happened back in March, when he was removed from the U.S. along with more than 200 Venezuelans and 22 Salvadorans. All of them were thought to be criminals. However, it later came to light that his deportation was actually a mistake caused by a paperwork error during the Trump administration.
Abrego Garcia first came to the U.S. illegally 14 years ago. In 2019, a judge decided he shouldn’t be deported because he would be in danger from gangs if he returned to El Salvador.
Despite that ruling, U.S. immigration officials still want to send him back. After being wrongly deported, he made it back to the United States, but he’s currently being held in custody because he’s now facing criminal charges from the Department of Justice and is waiting for his trial. He has pleaded not guilty.
There’s a serious concern that if he’s released from custody before his trial, immigration authorities (ICE) will grab him and try to deport him again possibly sending him back to the dangerous prison in El Salvador.
That’s why his legal team is actually fighting to keep him in U.S. custody for now, hoping it will protect him from being deported again.
On June 25, a federal judge said she was planning to release him from custody before his trial, but his lawyers were given a deadline of noon on June 26 to file documents explaining why they think he might still be deported if that happens. The government has until June 27 to respond.
Until the court officially makes a decision on his release and sets any conditions, Abrego Garcia will remain in the custody of U.S. Marshals. If he is released and ICE takes him, the court won’t be able to do anything to stop what happens next. This has led to protests and public support from people calling for his freedom and safety.
