“Total Loser” – Donald Trump Rages After Republican Joins Democratic Party, Citing His ‘Cult-Type Atmosphere’

Former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan has officially left the Republican Party and joined the Democrats — a move he says comes from deep moral and political differences with the GOP’s current direction. He explained his decision in detail in an opinion piece for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Duncan’s switch didn’t sit well with Donald Trump. The former president took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to attack him, calling Duncan a “failed former Lt. Governor” and “a total loser.” Trump wrote, “Was never able to get anything done, all he ever did was complain. We didn’t want him in the Republican Party any longer, so I’m told he became a Democrat. Good riddance Geoff. You don’t even have a chance!!!”
Duncan didn’t respond with insults. Instead, he explained that his decision came from a personal struggle to follow the Christian principle of “love my neighbor” — something he says has become harder to do within the Republican Party, especially when it comes to policies affecting the most vulnerable in society.
He pointed to key issues such as healthcare, Medicaid, gun safety, and immigration as major reasons for leaving. Duncan criticized the GOP’s belief that the only path to health insurance is through employment, noting that many hardworking people still lack coverage because their jobs don’t offer benefits or affordable plans. “So, the reality is they have a job — just the wrong job,” he said. He also condemned cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs like SNAP, arguing that these hurt families and children and go against his Christian values.
Duncan’s break with the GOP began years ago, when Trump tried to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results — a move Duncan openly opposed. Since then, he has described the Republican Party as “decimated and destroyed” under Trump’s leadership, calling it a “cult-type atmosphere.” He doubts the party will return to its former principles anytime soon.
Earlier this year, the Georgia Republican Party expelled Duncan, accusing him of supporting Democratic candidates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and of undermining Republican officials, including current Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones. Duncan’s decision to speak at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in support of Harris made his political shift even more public.
Duncan’s criticism of the GOP extends beyond Trump. He has condemned the party’s embrace of conspiracy theories, its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, and its rejection of bipartisan governance. On immigration, he opposed Trump’s aggressive mass-deportation policies, saying they lacked compassion and failed to solve problems. He believes immigration reform should include both strong border security and a path to citizenship for law-abiding immigrants.
He also disagrees with the party’s stance on gun safety. Duncan supports universal background checks and red-flag laws — policies that are popular among the public but have repeatedly been blocked by Republican lawmakers. To him, this shows that the GOP is increasingly out of touch with what most Americans want.
