Trump goes on furious rant about why Stephen Colbert was ‘fired’ after host cursed him out during show

President Donald Trump hasn’t held back in expressing how he feels about Stephen Colbert. After it was announced that *The Late Show with Stephen Colbert* is being cancelled, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to make it clear he thinks Colbert’s firing wasn’t because of him — but because, in his opinion, Colbert simply wasn’t good at his job.
Trump said people are blaming him for Colbert losing his show, but he denies having anything to do with the decision. According to him, Colbert was let go because he lacked talent and was causing CBS to lose around \$50 million a year. Trump added that the show’s losses were only getting worse and CBS had no choice.
Colbert, never one to stay quiet, responded to Trump on his show with a mix of humor and blunt words. He sarcastically asked if someone without talent could write the kind of sharp jokes he delivers. Then, in a more direct moment, he looked at a camera labeled “Eloquence Cam” and told Trump, quite clearly, to “go f\*\*k yourself.”
This only fueled Trump’s anger. In another post, he continued his rant by taking shots at other late-night hosts too. He said Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon were next in line to be “fired,” calling Kimmel less talented and Fallon weak and insecure. Trump said the TV business is simple: if you get good ratings, you’re safe. If not, you’re out — and he believes Colbert brought his downfall on himself. He predicted the other two comedians would eventually follow.
Colbert replied to Trump’s jab at Kimmel with his usual wit, saying he’s the one being “crucified” and joking that there’s only room for one martyr. He teased that from his high moral ground, he could see Kimmel’s house.
While CBS officially blamed the cancellation of *The Late Show* on financial reasons, Colbert poked fun at that explanation. He joked that his moustache — which he debuted in a recent monologue — was the real reason for his show being axed. He said, sarcastically, that CBS saw his facial hair and immediately pulled the plug. He called it not fascism, but “stachism.”
Colbert also said that since the show is ending, he feels freer to speak more openly, hinting he won’t hold back in the final episodes.
Jon Stewart, a fellow comedian and host of *The Daily Show*, stepped in to defend Colbert. He criticized CBS for letting go of a top-rated show that’s been around for over 30 years. Stewart questioned whether the decision was really about money or if the network was just trying to stay out of controversy — especially with CBS’s recent massive merger deal. He warned that if networks try too hard to avoid attention by playing it safe, they risk becoming boring and irrelevant.
In short, Trump and Colbert are in a very public, very personal fight, and neither seems ready to back down.
