President Donald Trump is getting attention again after his press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, told reporters he would be spending time with cryptocurrency investors during what she called his “personal time.
This raised a lot of eyebrows because when you’re the president, there’s really no clear line between personal time and official duties.
The event in question is a fancy dinner at Trump’s private golf club just outside Washington, D.C. It’s only for a very select group of people specifically, the top 220 investors in his personal meme cryptocurrency, called \$TRUMP. These investors have put up to \$148 million into the coin, and the people invited were told to look out for a special message confirming their spot.
The problem is, because cryptocurrency transactions often hide people’s real names, no one really knows who most of these big investors are. A past investigation by Bloomberg suggested many of them might not even be from the United States.
When reporters asked whether it was appropriate for the president to be involved in something that could enrich him personally, Leavitt said all of Trump’s businesses are in a blind trust run by his children. She added that people elected him again because they liked his success in business before he entered politics.
But that explanation didn’t go over well online. Critics quickly slammed the idea that a president can just claim “personal time” when it involves potentially profiting from his status. One political commentator joked that being president isn’t like wearing a different outfit for work and play it’s a 24/7 responsibility. Others went further, accusing Trump of basically accepting bribes under the cover of a private event.
This isn’t the first time Trump has been criticized for how he spends his time. He’s known for visiting his own golf courses frequently. Reports show that since starting his second term, he’s spent time at one of his own properties nearly every week often golfing. Some noted that while the economy struggled under his tariff policies, Trump was on the golf course in Florida.
So while his team insists this dinner is a private event with no connection to the White House, many are questioning whether it’s really that simple.
