Police in New Jersey say a young woman who claimed she survived a politically motivated assault is now accused of staging the entire event and intentionally injuring herself with the help of another person. The case stunned investigators because the scene they discovered appeared, at first, to be a brutal attack carried out by armed strangers.
Officers found 25-year-old Natalie Greene alone in a wooded area, distressed and crying. She was tied at the wrists and ankles with zip ties, and messages with political insults had been written on her skin.
Greene told police that three men with guns ambushed her, pinned her down, threatened her life, and sliced her with a sharp object. Photos taken later in a hospital showed marks and cuts across several parts of her body.
She said she was targeted because she had once worked for the federal government and had been a staffer for a Republican congressman.

At first, investigators treated the case as a serious threat possibly connected to rising political tensions. Greene repeated her story again two days later, insisting that unknown attackers had assaulted her, humiliated her, and left her tied up in the woods. But as detectives reviewed the evidence, her version of events began to fall apart.
According to federal prosecutors, Greene later admitted she had worked with another woman to stage the scene. Investigators say Greene paid the woman $500 to help inflict the injuries and then made a frantic 911 call reporting a fake attack in Egg Harbor Township.
The companion whose name has not been released—also gave police a story that didn’t match Greene’s, raising immediate suspicion. Detectives found that the descriptions of the supposed attackers were vague and inconsistent, and many details simply did not line up with the physical evidence.
Authorities say that before the incident, Greene had visited a body-modification artist in Pennsylvania and paid for the cuts that appeared on her body. Investigators tracked internet searches connected to Greene and her accomplice, including searches for zip ties and online forums related to body modification and scarring.
They also found messages and receipts indicating planning and preparation days before the so-called attack. All of this led investigators to conclude that the event had been staged to look like a politically motivated assault.

Greene previously worked for Representative Jefferson Van Drew, a Republican from New Jersey. His office said they were saddened by the news and hoped she was getting appropriate help, but noted she no longer worked for him.
Members of her hometown community expressed shock, saying they couldn’t understand why someone so young would put themselves through something so extreme, especially knowing the scars would last a lifetime.
Greene has been charged with conspiracy to falsely report a violent crime and with making false statements to law enforcement. She was released on a $200,000 bond while awaiting further legal proceedings.
If found guilty on both counts, she could face up to 10 years in prison and fines totaling up to $500,000. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they continue reviewing communications, financial records, and statements connected to the case.
