You let us down!’ Trump fans rebel against president over comments that ‘betray the base’

Trump’s supporters are furious with him after he praised New York City’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, calling him a “rational person.” Many of his loyal followers see Mamdani as someone who is strongly against their beliefs, so Trump’s friendly comments shocked them and made them feel betrayed.

The anger began after Trump met Mamdani on Friday. Despite months of attacks against the new mayor from both Republicans and Democrats, Trump came out of the meeting speaking highly of him. On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote, “It was a Great Honor meeting Zohran Mamdani, the new Mayor of New York City!”

For many of Trump’s fans, that message felt like a slap in the face.

One user, Indignant1, who even uses a photo of Trump as their profile picture, replied, “Very disappointed. You have let us down.” To them, Trump showing any respect toward Mamdani was unacceptable.

Another supporter, Erica Corrieri, who often shares Trump’s posts, demanded, “How was it an ‘honor’?” She then accused Mamdani of being “a dangerous manipulative actor,” clearly upset that Trump treated him kindly.

The comments only got stronger. A user named DJ 1776/2025 Revolution lashed out, saying, “I’m glad it was your great honor to meet a communist pig… he will destroy the country from within! Just like the Democrats have been trying to do for the last 20 years! I’m so glad you kissed his a– today! That is not what we voted for!” The message shows just how betrayed some of Trump’s voters felt.

Another fan, Constance Dawn Olson, warned Trump directly: “Be careful, sir. I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him. Once a commie, always a commie!” Her message suggested Trump was being naive or misled.

One Trump supporter using the name oopsaDaisysmom went even further, saying, “You have betrayed your base by honoring jihadis. I’m sick over you lately.” This shows how emotionally upset some of his followers are becoming.

Even users who proudly call Trump their president expressed disappointment. Someone with the username Elishouse wrote, “Not happy with this at all.” Another user, Rum-Becca, wrote, “I’m so sad my President bowed down to that kind of evil,” adding broken-heart emojis and an American flag.

A particularly passionate supporter, Wabccoa — who describes themselves as a “Trump-loving tea party warrior” — tried to warn Trump in dramatic terms: “WATCH OUT FOR THE SNAKE, SILLY MAN. YOU KNEW HE WAS A SNAKE BEFORE YOU TOOK HIM IN!”

Overall, Trump’s attempt to show respect or friendliness toward Mamdani has backfired. Instead of calming tensions or showing leadership, it has sparked a wave of anger from the very people who usually defend him the most. Many of his own supporters now feel confused, upset, or even betrayed by what they see as Trump praising someone they consider an enemy of their values.
