Donald Trump to Congress: No Vacation Until My ‘Big, Beautiful’ Bill Passes — Lock Yourselves In If You Have To

President Donald Trump is putting serious pressure on Congress to pass his new spending bill before the July 4 holiday. He made it clear that he doesn’t want any senators going on vacation until the bill is passed. On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump told lawmakers to stay in Washington and “lock yourself in a room if you must” to get the bill finished this week. He also told them to work with the House of Representatives so the bill can be approved quickly.

Right now, the Senate is working to adjust the bill because the Senate parliamentarian, who makes sure the rules are followed, said some parts of it break the rules. These rules are important because they allow the bill to pass with just a simple majority — that’s 51 votes — instead of the usual 60. Since Republicans have only 53 seats in the Senate, they need this special process, called reconciliation, to push the bill through.

Some Republicans are still not fully on board with the bill. They’re especially worried about how it might increase the national debt and how it handles certain tax deductions, like the cap on state and local tax write-offs (known as the SALT cap). Senator Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma has been talking with House Republicans to work out details on this issue, since the House version of the bill capped those deductions at \$40,000.

Despite these disagreements, Republican leaders remain confident they can meet the July 4 deadline. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said they’re moving ahead with a vote this week. House Speaker Mike Johnson backed this up, saying he’s been confident from the beginning and still believes they’ll get the job done.

However, things got more complicated when the parliamentarian removed certain parts of the bill for not following budget rules. Now, Senate Republicans are rushing to rewrite those parts so the bill can survive a vote, get through the House, and win over skeptical GOP senators.

So far, it’s a race against the clock. Trump wants results, not delays, and has made it clear that no one should leave town for the holiday until the bill is passed.
