Donald Trump’s presidency is effectively over’: New polling spells disaster for Trump in 2026

New polling results from key battleground states suggest that more voters now want President Donald Trump to be impeached than those who don’t. While it’s not a majority yet, more people support impeachment than oppose it, and one political journalist believes that support could grow into a clear majority before the 2026 midterm elections.

Journalist Jason Easley, who writes for the progressive news site PoliticusUSA, explained in a recent article that if Democrats manage to gain between 20 and 40 seats in the upcoming midterms—and they only need three to take back control of the House—then Trump’s presidency could effectively come to a halt. He argued that public opposition to Trump seems to be getting stronger and more intense over time. In his words, tensions are building, and he expects things to hit a boiling point by next November.

The polling was done by Lake Research Partners and commissioned by Free Speech For People, a nonprofit group. According to the poll, 49% of likely voters in swing districts think Trump should be impeached, while 44% are against it. These are people who are expected to vote in 2026, and many of them are from areas that could go either Republican or Democrat. In addition, the poll found that 56% of these voters disapprove of how Trump is handling his second term, while only 40% approve.

The pollsters were struck by how unusual these results are. They described them as “unprecedented,” meaning they haven’t seen anything like this before. It’s very rare, they noted, to see nearly half of voters wanting to impeach a president so early in their term—especially in swing districts, which tend to be more evenly split politically.

Easley also pointed out how fast things seem to be moving. He said that if the trend continues, support for impeaching Trump could easily rise above 50% before voters head to the polls in 2026. He found it remarkable that such a large number of people in politically mixed areas already want Trump to be impeached for a third time.

Trump has already been impeached twice. The first time was in 2019, after he was accused of pressuring the President of Ukraine to dig up damaging information on Joe Biden, who was running against him at the time. The second impeachment came in 2020, after Trump tried to overturn the results of the presidential election. Now, with concerns about his conduct continuing into his second term, more and more people are once again calling for impeachment—and this time, the pressure seems to be building even faster.
