Israel and Hamas have finally reached the first stage of a peace deal that could bring an end to the ongoing war in Gaza. Soon after the news broke, Donald Trump quickly stepped forward to take credit for helping make it happen. The President announced the deal on Wednesday and has since been praised by many of his supporters as a key figure in shaping the agreement.
However, former President Barack Obama shared a different tone in his recent social media post, which has stirred anger among Trump supporters. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Obama wrote, “We should all feel encouraged and relieved that an end to the conflict is within sight; that the remaining hostages will be reunited with their families; and that much-needed aid can start reaching the people in Gaza whose lives have been torn apart.”
He continued, “Now comes the difficult part for both Israelis and Palestinians — with help from the U.S. and the global community — to rebuild Gaza and work toward a future that respects the shared humanity and basic rights of both peoples. Only then can there be lasting peace.”
Trump allies were quick to react to Obama’s post, accusing him of deliberately leaving out Trump’s role in the peace deal. Donald Trump Jr. was among the first to respond, posting, “I’ll finish it for you. ‘Thank you, Donald Trump.’” Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz echoed the same point, writing, “Hey Barack, you forgot to say ‘Thank you, President Trump!’”
Tennessee Congressman Tim Burchett joined in, adding, “You forgot to say thank you @realDonaldTrump.” Soon after, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung also weighed in, saying, “Say his name… PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.”
Richard Grenell, who served as Trump’s special envoy, took things further by resharing Obama’s post with the caption, “The fire starter is praising the firemen,” suggesting that Obama was partly to blame for the conflict Trump helped end. Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt also criticized Obama harshly, writing, “He couldn’t even say Trump’s name. Obama was one of the most divisive presidents in modern history. Even during a major moment of peace, he couldn’t bring himself to be a unifier. Sad.”
Trump, staying true to his usual style, made sure the spotlight remained on him. He was also publicly thanked by several leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for his part in the peace process.
The backlash from Trump’s supporters came just hours after Trump himself went on a rant about Obama following a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb at the White House. Trump has often expressed jealousy over Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize, awarded in 2009, and used the moment to criticize him again.
“Obama got a prize for doing nothing,” Trump said. “He didn’t even know why he got it. They gave it to him just for being elected. He destroyed our country. He was not a good president. The worst president is Sleepy Joe Biden, but Obama wasn’t good either.”
Trump went on to claim that despite Obama’s Nobel Prize, his own actions were far more significant. “Nobody in history has stopped eight wars in nine months. I did that. It’s never been done before. I didn’t do it for awards. I did it because I saved lives,” he said.
Trump’s repeated claims about ending multiple wars and deserving a Nobel Peace Prize have often been questioned by fact-checkers, as there is little evidence to support them.
Now, with many in the MAGA movement attacking Obama for not thanking Trump in his peace-related post, the question remains: will Obama respond to the criticism, or will he simply choose to ignore it and let the controversy fade away?
