House Speaker Mike Johnson warned young conservative voters that the next midterm elections could decide the future of President Donald Trump and the direction of the country.
Speaking on Sunday, Johnson urged them to turn out in large numbers and work hard to keep Republicans in control of the House of Representatives in 2026. He said that if Democrats manage to take back the House, Trump would almost certainly face impeachment again.
Johnson made these comments while addressing a crowd at Turning Point USA’s annual America Fest conference in Phoenix, Arizona. He told the audience that the stakes could not be higher and claimed that “everything is on the line” in the 2026 midterms.
According to him, a Republican loss would open the door for what he called the “radical left” to impeach Trump and throw the government into turmoil. He stressed that conservatives must do everything possible to stop that from happening.
At the same time, Trump’s political standing appears to be weakening. Recent polling shows his approval ratings falling to levels close to the lowest points of his first term. As Trump’s popularity drops, Republicans’ chances in the 2026 midterm elections are also starting to look more uncertain.
Last week, CNN data analyst Harry Enten pointed to new polling that raised alarms for Republicans. The surveys showed that about two out of every three Americans believe the country is on the “wrong track.” Enten said that if these numbers do not improve, the Republican Party could very well lose control of the House of Representatives in the next election.
Some Democrats have already shown they are willing to move forward with impeachment efforts. Earlier this year, Al Green, a Democratic congressman from Texas, introduced articles of impeachment against Trump in April. Because Democrats currently do not hold a majority in the House, the effort did not go anywhere and was quickly set aside.
However, the situation could change dramatically if Democrats win back the House in 2026. With control of the chamber, Democratic leaders would have the power to bring impeachment articles to the floor and push them forward, as long as most of their members supported the move.
How far such an effort would go would depend on how large their majority is and how united they remain, but the possibility is very real something Republicans like Johnson are using as a warning to energize their base ahead of the midterm fight.
