During a White House event focused on making health care more affordable, President Donald Trump appeared to briefly fall asleep in the middle of the proceedings, drawing attention from those watching the broadcast.
The event took place on April 23 and included several high-profile figures, such as George Yancopoulos, who serves as president and chief scientific officer of Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, as well as Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Medicare director Chris Klomp. They stood behind Donald Trump in the Oval Office while he spoke about a new agreement with the pharmaceutical company.
As the announcement went on, Trump appeared to lose focus. His eyes became heavy, slowly closing and reopening several times, giving the impression that he was struggling to stay awake. The moment happened roughly halfway through his speech and was noticeable enough to spark reactions among viewers and critics.
What made the situation more striking to some observers is Trump’s long-standing habit of mocking his political rival Joe Biden with the nickname “Sleepy Joe.” Critics quickly pointed out the contrast, suggesting that the moment undermines his repeated attacks on Biden’s energy and alertness.
This was not the first time such an incident has been noticed. Just last month, Trump appeared to doze off during a Cabinet meeting while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth spoke at length about media coverage of the U.S.-Israeli conflict involving Iran and Lebanon. A few days before that, he was also seen looking drowsy during a press conference linked to his Memphis Task Force initiative.
These repeated moments have fueled ongoing debates about his focus and overall sharpness in public appearances. Some critics argue that these visible lapses, combined with his often intense and controversial posts on social media, raise questions about his current state of mind and ability to stay consistently engaged during important events.
Supporters, however, tend to dismiss such moments as minor or exaggerated, pointing out the long hours and pressure that come with the presidency. Still, the footage from the health care event has added to a growing list of instances that continue to generate discussion about his performance in public settings.
