A 23-Year-Old Migrant Who Arrived in the UK by Small Boat Threatened to Kill a Family After They Stopped His Alleged Plot

Serhat Tuglaci, a 23-year-old Turkish migrant who arrived in the UK by small boat, was jailed after a disturbing series of incidents that left local residents frightened and shaken.

The court heard that on the morning of October 12 last year, Tuglaci was wandering around a residential area in Bolton, Greater Manchester. Earlier that morning, he approached a woman who was sitting in a parked car with her father. He began speaking to her in a language she could not understand and then asked if he could have her bicycle. When she told him she did not have one, he unexpectedly opened the rear passenger door of the car.

The woman and her father immediately got out and challenged him about what he was doing. After they got back into the vehicle, Tuglaci tried to open the door again. The woman had to physically push him away to stop him from getting inside. Before leaving, she took a photograph of him. CCTV footage later showed him walking around the neighbourhood and looking through the windows of nearby homes.

A short time later, the situation became even more alarming. A woman living nearby came downstairs in her home and discovered a stranger asleep on her living room sofa. That stranger was Tuglaci. Several items inside the house appeared to have been disturbed, and a banana peel had been left on the fireplace.

At first, the woman assumed he might be one of her son’s friends who had stayed over. However, her son quickly confirmed that he had never seen the man before. The family woke Tuglaci, who reportedly appeared confused and dazed, behaving as though he was not fully aware of what was happening around him.

The woman’s husband rushed home after learning what had happened. He confronted Tuglaci and forced him out of the house and onto the street. During the confrontation, Tuglaci allegedly threatened him, saying, “Kill you, knife.” Moments later, he struck the woman on the shoulder before running away from the scene.

Police later arrested Tuglaci. He admitted several offences, including burglary, assault, and interfering with a vehicle.

During the court hearing, his defence lawyer said Tuglaci had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity. The lawyer also told the court that he wanted to return voluntarily to Turkey and highlighted concerns about his mental health, as well as previous drug use.

When sentencing him, Judge Nicholas Flanagan strongly criticised his actions. The judge said his behaviour had caused significant fear and distress to innocent members of the public who were simply going about their normal lives. He said the incidents would have been shocking and upsetting for the victims and emphasised that such conduct could not be tolerated.

Tuglaci was sentenced to 12 months in prison. However, the judge noted that he had already spent around eight months in custody while awaiting the outcome of the case, meaning he was unlikely to serve much more time behind bars. The case has raised concerns among local residents about safety and security after a stranger was able to enter a family home while the occupants were still inside.
