Man Who Smuggled People to the UK by Boat Was Caught, But the Judge Revealed One Shocking Detail About His Actions

An Algerian man has been jailed after piloting a dangerously overcrowded small boat carrying 66 migrants across the English Channel, putting the lives of everyone on board at serious risk.

Azzeddine Ainbouzid, 29, was sentenced to two years in prison at Canterbury Crown Court on Wednesday, June 24. He admitted to endangering lives during the crossing and to entering the UK without valid entry clearance.

The small inflatable boat was carrying far more people than it was built for. It was designed to hold only around 20 passengers, but 66 people were packed onto it, including three children and a pregnant woman. Prosecutors said the vessel was so overcrowded that some passengers had to sit with their feet hanging in the sea, while others were not wearing life jackets during the dangerous journey.

According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the boat was not suitable for crossing the English Channel, one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. Because it was carrying so many people, its ability to stay safe on the water was seriously affected.

During the crossing on April 18, Ainbouzid was seen steering the boat towards the UK. However, when he noticed a Border Force rescue vessel approaching, he reportedly removed his hands from the tiller, causing the boat to spin out of control in circles. Prosecutors said this reckless action placed every passenger on board in even greater danger.

Dramatic drone footage released by the CPS captured the overcrowded boat speeding across the Channel before it lost control. Investigators later identified Ainbouzid as the person steering the vessel by matching his facial hair and the logo on the sleeve of his black jacket.

Andrew Stephens, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said the boat was poorly built and completely unsuitable for such a dangerous journey. He said Ainbouzid had put the lives of everyone on board at risk, including young children and a pregnant woman, by acting recklessly when he let go of the controls.

The court also heard that this was not Ainbouzid’s first illegal entry into the UK. He first arrived in 2023 and, within a year, was convicted of being drunk and disorderly and resisting a police officer. He received a 12-month conditional discharge for those offences.

In addition to his criminal record in the UK, Ainbouzid also has previous convictions in France for drug trafficking and aggravated theft. The CPS asked the court to take these previous offences into account when deciding his sentence.

Mr. Stephens said prosecutors made sure the judge was aware of Ainbouzid’s previous illegal entry into Britain and his criminal history so that the sentence would properly reflect the seriousness of his offending. He added that anyone who pilots small boats carrying migrants should expect to be caught and prosecuted. He also warned that those sentenced to more than a year in prison could face deportation, and that any future asylum application would take their criminal conviction into account.

Border Security and Asylum Minister Alex Norris said the government is continuing its efforts to target the criminal networks behind illegal Channel crossings. He said the latest sentence sends a clear message that those who help bring migrants to the UK through dangerous crossings will be brought to justice.

He added that government action against people-smuggling gangs, including arrests, convictions, and the seizure of equipment, has increased by nearly 50%, and promised that authorities will continue working to break up these criminal organisations.

Ainbouzid is now the third person to be jailed under the UK’s new offence of endangering lives during illegal small boat crossings. The first two men convicted under the law, Sudanese nationals Mohammad Tajik, 32, and Ali Alnour, 27, were sentenced earlier after separate Channel crossings. Tajik received a two-year prison sentence, while Alnour was jailed for two years and three months.
