I Died When My Life Support Was Switched Off, Then I Saw What Comes After Death’

Gene Long’s family had reached the heartbreaking point where they believed there was no hope left. Doctors had told them that the 33-year-old construction worker had almost no chance of surviving after spending two months in a coma. His body had been badly damaged by years of severe diabetes, drug addiction, and homelessness. Medical staff estimated that he had only a one percent chance of pulling through.

Accepting the devastating news, Gene’s parents made the painful decision to switch off his life support. They signed the paperwork to donate his organs so they could help save other people’s lives. At the same time, they started planning his funeral, picked out the clothes he would be buried in, and arranged for a priest to give him his last rites. Everyone believed they were saying their final goodbye.

But according to Gene, something completely unexpected happened.

Just over an hour after his life support was turned off, he suddenly opened his eyes. Around 30 family members and close friends had gathered in his hospital room to say farewell. Instead of watching him die, they were left stunned as he woke up smiling.

Gene said he could not speak immediately after waking because of the damage caused by the breathing tube, but he could see the shock on everyone’s faces. He said his parents had only just signed the documents allowing doctors to let him go, making his sudden recovery even more unbelievable.

His health problems had started years earlier. Gene said he had become deeply addicted to methamphetamine and fentanyl, while also struggling with severe diabetes. The addiction destroyed his life, leaving him homeless despite repeated attempts by his parents to help him. He described feeling trapped in a cycle that he could not escape.

Life became so painful that he admitted he wanted to die. During that period, he questioned whether God even existed and wondered why life had become so difficult. He often cried to his mother and felt there was no future left for him.

As his addiction continued, Gene neglected his health. Without realizing it, his blood sugar level climbed to an astonishing 1,900. A normal blood sugar reading is around 100, and doctors say levels above 900 are often fatal. The last thing he remembers before losing consciousness was walking near a flight of steps. He suffered a seizure, fell backwards, hit his head on the steps, and experienced bleeding on his brain.

After that, everything went dark.

Gene claims that what happened next completely changed his life.

He said he found himself walking across what looked like an endless ocean made entirely of energy rather than water. The glowing sea was filled with every colour imaginable, with bright lights moving through it as if it were alive. He said it felt peaceful beyond anything he had ever experienced.

His first thought, he said, was that he had finally come home.

Gene claimed he no longer remembered his life on Earth. Instead, he believed he had always existed in that place. He described seeing mist and vines surrounding him before feeling as though his entire being became one with the glowing energy around him.

He compared the experience to floating inside a balloon. When the balloon burst, he said he merged with the energy itself and felt completely connected to everything around him.

During the experience, Gene said he noticed someone who looked like his late grandfather. He immediately felt drawn toward the figure, but as he got closer he realised it was not his grandfather at all.

Instead, Gene believes the figure was the Holy Spirit.

He described the being as having no face, only brilliant light. According to Gene, the overwhelming feeling coming from the figure was pure love unlike anything he had ever known.

He said there are no human words capable of describing the love he experienced. It felt, he explained, as though he was the only person that had ever existed and was completely loved.

Although the figure never spoke aloud, Gene said he somehow understood everything without a single word being exchanged. He claimed they both knelt together and began vibrating before every painful memory from his earthly life disappeared. All the suffering, addiction, fear and sadness were gone, leaving only love and peace behind.

Then, in an instant, Gene said he was suddenly pulled back into his hospital bed.

When he regained consciousness, doctors were reportedly astonished. They had warned his family that even if he somehow survived, he would probably never walk or speak again because his brain, kidneys and liver had all been failing. His body was also battling serious infections, leaving doctors convinced there was virtually no chance of recovery.

Instead, Gene slowly began improving.

Although his recovery took months, he says one of the biggest miracles was that his addiction completely disappeared. After waking from the coma, he never experienced the overwhelming desire to use drugs again.

Gene believes God had given him a second chance and says he had no intention of wasting it. Because he had been unconscious for so long, he also avoided many of the painful withdrawal symptoms that people usually suffer when coming off drugs.

The recovery was still extremely difficult. He was so weak that he could not even lift a cup. He lost part of one ear because of a bedsore and suffered damage to his vocal cords after the breathing tube was removed.

But as soon as he could speak again, he started sharing his experience with anyone willing to listen. Today, he tells complete strangers about what happened because he believes his story can give hope to people facing addiction, illness or fear of death.

Gene also says his recovery surprised doctors in other ways. His kidneys and liver recovered without the need for dialysis, and his diabetes, which had previously required insulin injections five times every day, eventually went into remission. He describes this as another miracle.

Today, Gene says he has rebuilt his life, repaired his relationship with his family and found a sense of peace that drugs could never provide.

Looking back, he believes the emptiness he once tried to fill through addiction has now been replaced with love and faith. Gene says his experience completely changed the way he views both life and death.

He now believes death is not the end and says what he experienced on “the other side” felt more like home than anything he had ever known on Earth.
