Donald Trump bragging about White House ‘buying 250 Cadillacs’ sparks backlash: ‘People can’t afford groceries’ (Video)
Donald Trump has come under fire online after speaking proudly about the White House ordering 250 new Cadillac Escalades for the presidential motorcade.
The US president made the comments while speaking to a crowd at a General Motors testing facility in Milford, near Detroit. During his speech, Trump praised the luxury SUVs and said they would become part of the government fleet used by his security team.
Speaking about the vehicles, which have a starting retail price of around $90,000 each, Trump told the audience: “The one and only Escalade. You know we ordered 250 Escalades, right? We ordered 250 Escalades. We look sharp in those Escalades.”
He went on to joke that the people who work with him had become “very spoiled” because they enjoyed travelling in the luxury vehicles. Trump also admitted that he personally liked the Escalade as well.
His remarks quickly spread across social media, where many critics questioned whether spending money on hundreds of expensive SUVs was appropriate at a time when many Americans are struggling with rising living costs, high grocery bills and expensive fuel prices.
One popular social media account, The Angry Staffer, mocked the announcement by writing that while many families could barely afford basic necessities because of inflation, the government was buying 250 Cadillac Escalades. The post sarcastically suggested that efforts to reduce wasteful government spending appeared to be missing in this case.
Another user questioned where the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was, referring to the government’s push to cut unnecessary spending.
Others also criticised the decision, with one person questioning why the government needed as many as 250 luxury SUVs when the United States continues to face a national debt of around $40 trillion. Another commenter accused politicians of expecting ordinary taxpayers to cover the cost while many families continue to face financial pressure.
Political activist Derek Cressman also joined the criticism, saying everyday Americans are finding it difficult to pay for petrol and groceries while their leader is spending taxpayers’ money on hundreds of luxury Cadillacs.

The backlash comes as Trump continues to attract attention for other controversial actions. In recent days, he has once again suggested that he may try to seek a third term as president in 2028, despite the US Constitution limiting presidents to two elected terms.

The posts sparked fresh debate online, with some supporters praising them while critics described them as unusual and said they added to growing concerns about his repeated comments regarding another presidential run.
