Republican Thinks He Knows Reason Behind Donald Trump’s Pathological Aversion To Truth
Senator John Kennedy has shared his own idea about why President Donald Trump often refuses to back away from claims, even when there is little or no evidence to support them.
Speaking during an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, the Republican senator from Louisiana suggested that Trump has a habit of saying whatever is on his mind and then sticking with it, even when new facts suggest otherwise.
The discussion centered on Trump’s continued claim that the damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was caused by vandals. However, the U.S. Justice Department recently admitted in court that the damage was not likely caused by vandalism but was instead linked to problems from a rushed renovation project.
When asked about Trump’s comments, Kennedy said he was not sure whether the president truly believed what he was saying, whether it was part of his political messaging, or whether he was simply speaking without fully thinking things through.
Kennedy joked that Trump “gets anxious when he has an unspoken thought,” suggesting that the president often feels the need to immediately say whatever comes into his mind.
The case involved Olympian David Hearn, who had been charged with vandalising the Reflecting Pool. If convicted, he could have faced up to 10 years in prison. However, after reviewing new documents from the Interior Department and carrying out a fresh inspection of the memorial, prosecutors changed their position.
In court documents, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the newly discovered evidence made it difficult to blame the widespread damage on vandalism. She wrote that there was not enough evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that vandalism had caused the damage, leading the Justice Department to ask the court to dismiss the case.
Despite this, Trump rejected the Justice Department’s conclusion. In a post on Truth Social, he said he “100%” disagreed with the decision to drop the case. However, he did not provide any new evidence to support his claim that vandals were responsible.
After the charges were dropped, Hearn’s lawyers welcomed the decision but said it did not fully correct what had happened. They argued that dismissing the case could not erase what they described as an abuse of government power.
His legal team said Hearn, whom they called a patriotic American, had done nothing wrong and should never have been arrested or charged in the first place. They criticised the government’s handling of the case, saying officials acted first and looked at the facts later. They also said the Trump administration owed Hearn a public apology for the ordeal he had been forced to go through.
