Hegseth Refuses to Come Clean About Trump’s $400M Gift, But Donald Trump’s Son Didn’t Get the Memo and Blows the Story Wide Open

For months, the Trump administration defended its decision to accept a controversial $400 million aircraft from Qatar by saying the plane could eventually be placed in Donald Trump’s future presidential library.

However, Eric Trump has now cast doubt on that explanation. In a short exchange with NBC News last week, he said there were currently no plans for the aircraft to go to the proposed presidential library in Miami.

His comment has restarted questions about what will happen to the luxury plane after Donald Trump leaves office. It also appears to conflict with earlier statements from administration officials, who suggested the aircraft would eventually become part of the presidential library.

There is currently no evidence that Trump intends to keep the plane or use it as his private aircraft after leaving the White House. However, critics say the lack of a clear answer is worrying because of the plane’s enormous value and the constitutional concerns surrounding such a large gift from a foreign government.

The aircraft is a Boeing 747-8 donated by Qatar to the US Department of Defense for presidential use. It was valued at around $400 million before expensive security upgrades were added. The arrangement immediately faced criticism from both Democrats and Republicans because it is extremely unusual for a foreign government to give such a valuable gift for use by an American president.

Trump welcomed the offer when it was announced. He described it as a generous gesture from Qatar and said it would be foolish to reject such an expensive aircraft when it was being offered for free.

Administration officials later said the plane could eventually be transferred to Trump’s planned presidential library in Miami. Supporters argued that this meant it would remain connected to an official presidential institution and would not become Trump’s personal property.

Eric Trump’s latest comment has now created more confusion.

“No. That’s not the plan at the moment for Miami,” he reportedly told NBC News in a text message.

Eric had previously told The Palm Beach Post that an older, retired Air Force One would be displayed at the library instead of the Qatari aircraft.

The New York Times also reported that no final decision had been made about whether the Qatari plane would be transferred to the presidential library. Earlier discussions reportedly included the possibility of displaying both the retired Air Force One and the plane donated by Qatar, but it remains unclear whether that idea is still being considered.

The aircraft does not legally belong to Trump. It is owned by the US government through the Department of Defense. Before it could be transferred to a presidential library or any other outside organisation, officials would first have to declare it to be property that the federal government no longer needs.

Critics quickly reacted to Eric Trump’s statement, with some social media users claiming that he may have accidentally revealed that the original plan had changed. Some suggested Trump might eventually try to use the aircraft for personal travel after leaving office.

However, those claims are only speculation. Neither Trump nor the White House has announced any plan for him to keep or personally use the aircraft after his presidency.

The plane has already caused controversy over its security and suitability for presidential travel. Trump first used it in July during an international trip to Turkey for a NATO summit. However, he returned to Washington aboard one of the older Air Force One aircraft.

The New York Times later reported that the new plane did not have all the defensive equipment found on the traditional presidential aircraft, including some antimissile systems. Because of increased security concerns during the conflict with Iran, officials reportedly advised Trump to use the older aircraft for his return journey.

Trump later admitted that more work needed to be completed before the plane could fully replace the existing Air Force One aircraft. He said the plane already had many capabilities but would soon be sent away for further improvements.

Democratic lawmakers are continuing to demand a clear answer about the plane’s future.

During a recent hearing, Senator Chris Murphy asked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth whether he could promise that Trump would not remove the aircraft from the federal government’s fleet when he left office.

Hegseth refused to make that promise, saying the final decision was not necessarily his to make. He added that the administration was grateful to have the aircraft available for the Air Force to use in protecting the president.

Murphy criticised the response, calling it deeply unsatisfactory for the American public. For now, the plane remains government property, but its long-term future is still uncertain.
