Donald Trump has raised fresh concerns about the Alaska Senate election after claiming that a candidate who shares the same name as a Republican senator has suddenly disappeared. The president even suggested that the man might have been kidnapped, although he provided no evidence to support the claim.
The controversy comes as Republicans face a tough political battle to keep control of Congress. Trump has become increasingly worried about the Senate race in Alaska, where Republican Senator Dan Sullivan is facing a challenge from Democrat Mary Peltola.
However, another candidate has made the election more complicated. Daniel J. Sullivan, a retired schoolteacher running as an independent, has a name very similar to that of the Republican senator.
Trump believes this could confuse voters and cause some people who want to support the Republican senator to accidentally vote for the independent candidate instead.
In a series of angry posts on his Truth Social platform early Monday morning, Trump claimed that Daniel J. Sullivan had gone missing and that nobody knew where he was.
He wrote that the candidate had completely disappeared and suggested that Democratic lawyers might have kidnapped him.
Trump also accused Democrats of trying to interfere with the election, claiming they were afraid of being prosecuted for election fraud. However, he did not provide evidence that the candidate had been kidnapped or that any election fraud had taken place.
Reports from CBS News offered a different explanation for the candidate’s whereabouts.
According to the news outlet, Daniel J. Sullivan had left his hometown and boarded a flight to Anchorage. A person who reportedly saw him getting on the plane said that Sullivan and his wife were known locally for travelling around the world.
This suggested that the candidate had been travelling rather than disappearing under suspicious circumstances.
Meanwhile, The New York Times had earlier reported that people connected to Mary Peltola’s campaign were involved in recruiting the independent candidate to enter the Senate race.
Trump has used that report to question why someone with almost the same name as the Republican senator would appear on the ballot.
In another social media post, the president accused Democrats of attempting to steal the election by putting what he described as a fake Daniel J. Sullivan on the ballot.
He argued that some voters might struggle to tell the two candidates apart, potentially costing the Republican senator important votes.
Trump also called on people in Alaska to support Republican candidates in the upcoming election.
He encouraged voters to back Senator Dan Sullivan, Bernadette Wilson for governor and Nick Begich for the House of Representatives.
The president gave all three candidates his full endorsement, describing them as patriots who would not disappoint the people of Alaska.
Trump also praised his own record in the state, claiming that nobody had done more for Alaska than he had. He added that Senator Dan Sullivan had supported his administration throughout.
However, some Alaska residents have dismissed concerns that voters will be confused by the similar names.
One man from Anchorage told CNN that he could easily identify the candidates on the ballot.
He joked that he could tell the difference even without wearing his glasses, explaining that the names were clearly written in black and white.
His comments suggested that at least some voters were not worried about making a mistake when choosing their preferred candidate.
The situation has attracted attention because the Alaska Senate race could play an important role in determining which party controls Congress.
For Republicans, losing the seat could make their political position more difficult, while Democrats see the contest as an opportunity to gain ground.
Trump’s comments have added another layer of controversy to an already closely watched election.
Although the president has raised serious allegations about the independent candidate and his possible disappearance, the available reporting does not establish that Daniel J. Sullivan was kidnapped or that Democrats committed election fraud.
For now, the dispute continues to centre on the two candidates sharing similar names and whether that could influence how people vote in Alaska.
