Billionaire businessman Elon Musk has attracted attention after reportedly deleting a message in which he encouraged Americans to vote for Republican candidates during the US midterm elections.
The Tesla and SpaceX boss had used his social media platform, X, to send a short message to millions of people on Election Day. His message contained just three words: “Vote red today!”
In American politics, red represents the Republican Party, while blue represents the Democratic Party. Musk’s message was therefore a clear appeal to voters to support Republican candidates in the election.
However, things did not go as Republicans had hoped. As election results began coming in from different parts of the United States, Democrats started winning several important contests, including seats that Republicans had controlled for years.
By early Wednesday morning, Musk’s message encouraging people to vote Republican had reportedly disappeared from his X account.
Several American news organisations, including Business Insider and The Washington Post, reported that the billionaire had deleted the post. Even Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot available on X, reportedly confirmed that the message had been removed.
The timing of the deletion quickly attracted attention because it happened as Republicans were facing disappointing election results.
Musk had been one of the biggest financial supporters of Republican candidates during the election campaign. Reports suggest that he spent approximately $446 million supporting Republican candidates and political efforts, with much of the money directed towards races in Texas.
His financial involvement made him one of the most influential individual donors during the election period.
Apart from providing money, Musk also used his social media platform to encourage people to support Republicans. He regularly shared political messages, criticised Democratic candidates and promoted Republican politicians.
With millions of followers on X, his messages had the potential to reach a large number of American voters.
Despite deleting the short Election Day message, Musk reportedly left several other posts supporting Republicans on his account.
He also appeared to acknowledge the disappointing results with a joke posted early Wednesday morning.
Referring to conspiracy theories about his involvement in elections, Musk joked that his supposed election-interfering space lasers had failed to work this time.
His comment appeared to be a humorous response to the Republican Party’s poor performance rather than a serious statement.
The election results were particularly significant because Musk had invested so much money and public support in helping Republican candidates win.
Although wealthy individuals often donate money to political campaigns, Musk’s involvement went beyond financial contributions. He openly encouraged voters to support one political party and used his personal influence to promote its candidates.
However, the results showed that financial support and social media influence do not always guarantee victory at the ballot box.
The reported deletion has also brought attention back to previous occasions when Musk removed controversial political statements from his account.
One of the most widely discussed examples happened during his public disagreement with President Donald Trump last year.
Musk had previously worked closely with Trump and played an important role in the administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, which was created to reduce government spending and improve efficiency.
During that period, Musk became known for his strong support for cutting government costs and reducing what he considered unnecessary spending.
However, his relationship with Trump became strained after the billionaire strongly criticised the president’s major spending and tax legislation, which Trump described as his “big, beautiful bill.”
Musk publicly opposed the legislation and used X to express his frustration with the president’s decisions.
Their disagreement soon became personal, with both men making public comments against each other.
At one point, Musk made a serious allegation involving Trump’s name and the Jeffrey Epstein files. The allegation attracted widespread attention because of the controversy surrounding Epstein and his connections with powerful individuals.
However, Musk later deleted the post and admitted that some of his comments about Trump had gone too far.
His decision to remove the message came after several days of public disagreement between the two men.
The incident raised questions about Musk’s approach to political arguments, particularly when he makes strong statements online and later removes them.
Despite their earlier disagreement, Musk and Trump eventually appeared to repair their relationship.
In September, Trump included Musk in a White House meeting focused on advanced technology and artificial intelligence.
The following month, the president presented Musk with the National Medal of Science during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The award was another public sign that the relationship between the two powerful figures had improved after their earlier political dispute.
Now, the latest controversy surrounding Musk’s deleted election message has once again placed his political activities under public attention.
Some observers have questioned why he removed the message after the results began going against Republicans, especially when he had spent months encouraging people to support the party.
Others have pointed out that deleting a social media post does not necessarily mean someone has changed their political position.
Musk has not been shown to have withdrawn his wider support for Republican candidates simply because the particular message disappeared.
The billionaire remains an important figure in American political discussions because of his wealth, his ownership of X and his willingness to speak publicly about elections and government policies.
His involvement also shows how closely social media, business and politics have become connected in the United States.
For Democrats, the election victories represented an important political boost, particularly in areas where Republicans had previously enjoyed strong support.
For Republicans, the results raised questions about their campaign strategies and whether the backing of influential figures such as Musk had been enough to persuade voters.
As Americans continue discussing the election results, Musk’s reported decision to delete his three-word message has become another talking point.
What began as a simple appeal to voters on Election Day has now turned into a wider discussion about political influence, campaign spending and the reactions of powerful supporters when election results do not go their way.
