Donald Trump has often mocked Barack Obama’s educational background, but he has gone to great lengths to keep his own academic records hidden. In 2019, during his first term as president, Trump reportedly instructed his legal team to send threatening letters to his former schools, warning them not to release any information about his grades, achievements, or potential failures.
These letters, which were revealed by his former attorney Michael Cohen during a congressional testimony, threatened legal action, including jail time, for anyone who leaked his academic history.
Trump attended Fordham University for two years before transferring to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Despite his claims of being “first in his class” at Wharton, the school’s records show that he did not graduate with honors, which requires a GPA of at least 3.40.
This discrepancy has fueled speculation about his academic performance and whether he exaggerated his achievements.
Interestingly, Trump’s efforts to hide his academic records seem excessive, as the 1974 Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act already makes it illegal for schools to release a student’s records without their permission.
However, given Trump’s high-profile status and controversial reputation, he may have been concerned about leaks, especially since his educational background has long been a topic of public interest.
Trump’s secrecy about his academic history contrasts with his public criticism of Barack Obama’s education. Both presidents attended less competitive schools before transferring to Ivy League institutions—Obama to Harvard Law School and Trump to Wharton. While neither graduated with honors from their undergraduate programs, Obama went on to earn magna cum laude honors from Harvard Law, a fact that Trump has often overlooked while questioning Obama’s Ivy League credentials.
Critics suggest that Trump’s obsession with hiding his academic records may stem from insecurities about his own educational achievements. By mocking Obama’s background while aggressively protecting his own, Trump appears to be projecting his own anxieties. Whether his academic records will ever be made public remains unclear, but his efforts to keep them hidden have only added to the mystery and speculation surrounding his early years.
