John Roberts has had enough’: Analysts say Supreme Court just put Donald Trump on notice

Legal experts say Chief Justice John Roberts is starting to push back against President Donald Trump, especially after warning that the way judges are being criticised is going too far and becoming dangerous.

Speaking at Rice University in Houston this week, Roberts explained that while it is completely normal for people to disagree with court decisions, the problem begins when criticism stops being about the law and starts becoming personal.

He made it clear that judges expect their rulings to be questioned and debated, but attacking them as individuals is something different and harmful.

He said that judges’ opinions should always be open to criticism, but turning that criticism into personal hostility is risky and can create serious consequences. According to him, this kind of behaviour can damage respect for the legal system and make it harder for courts to function properly.

Many analysts believe Roberts was indirectly responding to Trump, who has repeatedly criticised judges, including Roberts himself. Trump recently targeted him over a court decision related to tariff policies, and this has added to a pattern of public attacks on members of the judiciary.

Legal analyst Michael Popok pointed out that within a short period of time, several high-level officials had spoken out against Trump, including the Federal Reserve chairman and senior judges.

He suggested that Roberts’ comments show that even top figures in the legal system are becoming frustrated and may be reaching their limit with the ongoing attacks.

Another legal expert, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, agreed that it is important Roberts spoke out, but she believes more needs to be done.

She said that simply speaking up may not be enough, and that stronger actions or consequences might be necessary to address the situation properly.

She also warned that Trump’s repeated public criticism of judges, and even their families, is creating a tense and unsafe atmosphere around the courts. According to her, this behaviour is not just about disagreement anymore, but is starting to weaken public trust in the judicial system.
