JD Vance Tries to Recover from Embarrassing Fallout, But Freezes on the World Stage As Trump Sows Chaos, and the Moment Spirals into Total Humiliation

Vice President JD Vance seemed a bit out of his depth during a visit to Hungary, where he was trying to support the country’s struggling far-right leader Viktor Orbán. Orbán is known to be a close ally of Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

In a move that’s not typical for a U.S. administration, Vance and his wife, Usha, arrived in Budapest on April 7 to help boost support for Orbán, who is now facing a tough re-election race and could even lose power. But things didn’t go smoothly. A leaked phone call between Orbán and Putin from last year, along with an awkward press conference, made Vance look unprepared and out of sync with the situation.

In that leaked call from October 2025, Orbán reportedly told Putin he was ready to help him win the ongoing war in Ukraine “in any way.” He even said, “In any matter where I can be of assistance, I am at your service.” He compared himself to a small mouse helping a trapped lion in a story, which both men apparently found amusing.

Critics later said Orbán sounded overly eager to please Putin, even suggesting a possible meeting in Budapest that could include the Trump administration to show support for Russia’s war. That meeting never happened.

At the same time, things became even more awkward for Vance when Trump did not keep him informed about rising tensions with Iran. Vance ended up learning about major developments through a reporter and a message on his phone, which made him look embarrassed and out of the loop.

Earlier that day, Trump had posted a strong warning to Iran, demanding a deal to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, an important route that carries about 20% of the world’s oil. Iran had already restricted access to the strait, causing oil and gas prices to rise and affecting industries like farming in the U.S.

Trump warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran did not agree by the deadline. At the same time, both the U.S. and Israel continued bombing targets in Iran, including major infrastructure sites.

During a press conference with Orbán, Vance was asked if he had any updates about talks with Iran. He appeared confused and paused before admitting he didn’t have new information. He then mentioned he had just received a message from Steve Witkoff, a close Trump ally handling diplomacy, but said he needed to read it first before commenting. His response made the situation even more awkward and drew attention from reporters.

Online, many people reacted strongly, criticizing Vance for trying to influence another country’s election and for supporting a leader they see as authoritarian. Some questioned why taxpayer money was being spent on the trip, while others said they were tired of U.S. leaders backing strongman figures.

Orbán, who has been in power for 16 years, has also faced criticism at home. Hungary has struggled with high inflation in recent years, reaching nearly 26% in 2023, while reports claim people close to him have benefited financially. The country is set to hold elections on April 12, and the outcome remains uncertain.
