‘Republicans are freaked out’ as Donald Trump self-inflicted wound takes its toll: journalists

Political insiders are starting to worry more and more as the 2026 midterm elections get closer. Behind the scenes, many Republicans are feeling uneasy, and some party operatives say the GOP is struggling to come up with a clear message that voters can connect with. This concern is growing at the same time that President Donald Trump is facing declining popularity, which is making the situation even more difficult for the party.
Jackie Kucinich, who leads the Washington bureau at The Boston Globe, did not try to soften her words. She made it clear that many Republicans are genuinely nervous right now. According to her, one of the biggest signs of this fear is how the party is spending money. Instead of feeling confident, they are pouring huge amounts of cash into races they normally wouldn’t have to worry about.
A good example is Ohio. This is a state that has supported Trump multiple times and has been considered safely Republican in recent years. But now, Republicans are treating it like a major battleground. They have already spent around $79 million in just one month trying to protect a Senate seat from Democrat Sherrod Brown. That level of spending shows they are taking the threat very seriously. It suggests that even in places where they used to feel secure, they now see real risk.
Kucinich pointed out that issues like rising energy costs and the overall cost of living are making voters frustrated. Those economic pressures are creating an opening for Democrats, even in traditionally Republican areas. Because of that, the GOP is being forced to defend ground that used to be solid for them.
At the same time, Eugene Daniels highlighted another major problem facing Republicans. He said the party doesn’t have enough strong achievements to show voters. In politics, candidates usually run on what they’ve accomplished, but he argued that both the White House and Congress have not given Republican candidates much to campaign on. Without clear wins or progress to point to, it becomes harder to convince voters to stay loyal.
Daniels also stressed that Trump himself is adding to the challenge. He said that almost every day, Trump makes statements or takes actions that make things more complicated for Republican candidates. Instead of helping unify the party or strengthen its message, those moments often create distractions or controversies that Republicans then have to respond to.
All of this is creating a difficult environment for the GOP. They are dealing with internal anxiety, heavy spending in key races, economic concerns from voters, and messaging problems at the same time. As the midterms approach, these issues could shape how the party performs and whether it can hold on to its current strength or loses ground.
