A Man Who Secretly Entered a House, Stabbed a 6-Year-Old Boy in the Head Multiple Times While He Slept, Then Turned on the Boy’s Sister Was Released From Prison Over a Reason the Victim’s Family Could Not Accept

The family of a six-year-old boy who was brutally murdered while sleeping in his own bedroom say they are devastated and heartbroken after learning that the man responsible has been released from prison for the second time.

Logan Tipton’s loved ones said they cannot understand how Ronald Exantus, now 42, has been allowed to walk free again after serving just over half of his prison sentence. They say the news has reopened old wounds and brought back the pain they have lived with every day since Logan was killed.

Exantus spent nearly 11 years in prison for his role in the 2015 attack that left Logan dead and seriously injured other members of the family. The tragic attack happened on December 7, 2015, at the family’s home in Versailles, Kentucky.

According to investigators, Exantus entered the house through an unlocked door during the night. He then armed himself with a large kitchen knife and went into Logan’s bedroom, where the six-year-old was sleeping peacefully. Police said Exantus repeatedly stabbed the young boy in the head with such force that the knife became bent during the attack.

After attacking Logan, Exantus also turned on the boy’s father and sisters, stabbing them as well. Thankfully, they survived the horrifying attack, but the emotional scars have remained with them ever since. Exantus later admitted to police officers that he had stabbed and killed the young boy.

Although Exantus was found not guilty of Logan’s murder because of insanity linked to his schizophrenia diagnosis, he was still sentenced to prison for the violent attacks on the rest of the family.

He was first released from prison in October 2025 under Kentucky’s mandatory reentry supervision laws, despite strong objections from Logan’s family and the state parole board. However, just 12 days after his release, he was arrested in Florida after authorities said he failed to meet the legal requirement to register as a convicted felon. He was sent back to prison.

Now, after completing the remainder of his sentence, Exantus has once again been released. This time, his sentence has officially ended, and there is no legal requirement for him to be placed in a psychiatric hospital after leaving prison.

The news has left Logan’s family feeling angry, helpless, and emotionally exhausted. They say they have reached their limit after learning that the man responsible for taking Logan’s life is now free.

Logan’s father, Dean Tipton, said it is almost impossible to accept that the man who killed his son is able to continue living his life while Logan can never come home again. He said the situation has pushed him close to his breaking point, adding that while Exantus gets another chance at life, his little boy remains buried in a grave.

The family believes the punishment did not come close to matching the terrible crime. They say Exantus received what feels like only a light punishment, while they have been given a life sentence of grief, pain, and loss that they must carry forever.

Court records show Exantus became eligible for parole as early as 2019 because he received credit for time already served. His parole request was denied in 2021, and another decision was delayed in 2023 before he was eventually released in 2025. Although his original maximum release date was 2035, he reportedly earned around nine years of sentence reductions by completing various prison programs.

His lawyer has said that Exantus has continued receiving mental health treatment while in prison.

Following Logan’s death, his father and other family members worked hard to push for changes in Kentucky law to prevent similar situations from happening again. Their efforts led to the introduction of Logan’s Law, which increases penalties for violent offenders, strengthens parole rules, and requires tougher mental health evaluations before offenders can be released back into the community. The family hopes these changes will better protect other families from suffering the same tragedy they have endured.
