A Democratic lawmaker has made it very clear that she is not going to accept any plan that would force the public to pay for a very expensive new project. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez strongly pushed back against the idea of using taxpayer money to build a huge ballroom that Donald Trump wants to add to the White House.
When she was asked about it, she didn’t hesitate at all. Her response was direct and firm, making it clear she completely rejects the idea. She said there is no way she will support making ordinary people pay for something that costs as much as $400 million. To her, it’s simply unfair and unacceptable, especially at a time when many people are already struggling financially.
This issue came up again after a recent security scare at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Following that incident, some Republican lawmakers began suggesting that taxpayers should cover the cost of the ballroom, arguing that it could improve safety and provide a more secure space for events. But Ocasio-Cortez does not believe that explanation. She thinks it is just an excuse to shift the financial burden onto the public.
She also pointed out something important. Earlier, there were claims that the ballroom would not cost taxpayers anything at all. The plan, according to Trump, was to fund the project through private donations, possibly from wealthy individuals. But now, with some lawmakers talking about using public money instead, she sees it as a broken promise. In her view, it doesn’t make sense to suddenly ask the public to pay for something that was originally supposed to be privately funded.
She criticized the idea of building what she described as a “palace” using public funds. For her, it raises serious concerns about fairness and priorities. She believes taxpayer money should go toward things that directly help people, like healthcare, education, and basic services—not luxury-style construction projects.
Trump, on the other hand, has been very focused on this ballroom idea for quite some time. He talks about it often, even bringing it up in unrelated meetings and conversations. At one point, he reportedly paused during a meeting just to look out the window at the area where the ballroom could be built. He has also defended the project strongly and pushed back at critics online.
Even so, the project is already facing a number of challenges. There are questions about where the funding will actually come from, concerns about transparency, and even legal issues that could slow things down or stop it completely.
In the middle of all this, Ocasio-Cortez is making her position clear: she is not backing down. She says she will continue to oppose any attempt to make taxpayers pay for the project, and she believes many Americans would agree that their money should not be used this way.
