Democrats Have a Joe Biden Problem. Again.

The former president is stepping back into politics again at what many people see as the worst possible moment.

Honestly, many Americans had almost stopped thinking about Joe Biden. Since ending his 2024 campaign late and leaving the White House, he had mostly stayed quiet and out of the spotlight. A lot of people believed that was the best move for him and for the Democratic Party after the difficult end to his presidency.

Critics still argue that Biden’s decision to run for re-election instead of stepping aside earlier badly damaged his party’s chances and opened the door for Donald Trump to return to power. Some Democrats believe that if Biden had stepped down sooner, the party could have held a stronger and more competitive primary process before the election.

But Biden has never been someone who easily walks away from public attention, and now he is slowly returning to political discussions again. Recently, he endorsed candidates connected to his former campaign team in important primary races. At the same time, other Democratic candidates are also starting to bring up their connections to Biden while campaigning, especially in states like California.

During his presidency, Biden faced heavy criticism over inflation after the pandemic, as well as ongoing concerns about his age and health. By the time he left office, his approval ratings had fallen badly, landing somewhere in the high 30 percent range. Some polls now show that people compare him more favorably to Trump, but that does not mean voters have suddenly become enthusiastic about Biden again. Many Americans still view his presidency negatively or with disappointment.

Even so, some people argue that Biden’s popularity no longer matters because Trump is president now and the country is dealing with many current issues. Democrats are focused on matters such as immigration crackdowns, attacks on LGBTQ rights, protests, tensions involving judges and journalists, rising living costs, trade disputes, and conflicts happening around the world. Because of all that, many feel the party should focus entirely on the present instead of reopening debates about the 2024 election.

Still, Biden returning to the political stage creates a difficult situation for Democrats. Every time he appears in a campaign or gives an endorsement, reporters and opponents are likely to bring up the past again. That could become a distraction for Democratic candidates who want voters focused on Trump’s current policies and the economy.

Many voters, especially independents, still hold frustrations about how Democrats handled Biden’s age and health concerns during the 2024 election. Some feel the party waited too long to address the issue and allowed his campaign to continue even when doubts were growing publicly. Others believe the party pushed Kamala Harris forward without a truly open competition after Biden stepped aside.

Polls show that many independent voters feel Democrats lack strong leadership or a clear message right now.

However, political analysts say this problem may be easier to fix than people think. Some believe Democrats could regain trust simply by openly admitting that Biden stayed in the race too long and that the party handled the situation poorly.

At the same time, Biden still remains very popular among many Democratic voters themselves. That creates a strange problem for the party. In Democratic circles, having Biden’s support can still help certain candidates.

But in a general election, constantly praising Biden or tying campaigns too closely to his presidency could hurt Democrats with undecided voters who blame his administration for inflation and political instability.

Supporters of Democrats argue that none of this matters as much as the current controversies surrounding Trump’s second term. They believe voters are more concerned about rising prices, immigration enforcement, foreign conflicts, and political tensions happening right now than they are about Biden’s legacy.

But candidates may not be able to avoid the subject if Biden keeps appearing in races and making endorsements. Reporters and opponents will continue asking questions about him during debates and campaign events.

And every minute spent defending or explaining Biden is time that Democrats cannot spend talking about the economy, healthcare, immigration, or Trump’s leadership.

Most Democrats are not calling for the party to completely reject Biden or erase his accomplishments.

But many believe the party needs to show voters that it is moving forward instead of staying trapped in the past. Biden may not be ready to fully leave politics behind, but many Democrats feel the party itself needs to do exactly that.
