President Donald Trump has defended his Great American State Fair after the event faced widespread criticism and online mockery, using social media to praise the gathering while taking fresh shots at former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday, Trump claimed the fair had been a huge success and dismissed critics who suggested otherwise. He described the event as being “packed with happy people” and said everyone who attended loved it. Trump then compared the event to the leadership of his predecessors, arguing that neither Barack Obama nor Joe Biden would have been capable of organising or delivering something similar.
The president challenged his supporters with what he called a simple question, asking whether Obama or what he often refers to as “Sleepy Joe” Biden could have successfully built and operated the Great American State Fair. Trump answered the question himself, insisting that the answer was a firm “no.”
The comments came as the fair continued to attract negative attention online. The event, which was organised by the Trump-linked group Freedom 250, had already encountered several problems before it officially got underway.
Reports said a number of musicians and entertainers who had originally agreed to perform pulled out after discovering the event’s ties to Trump, forcing organisers to make last-minute changes to the entertainment schedule. The withdrawals added to growing controversy surrounding the fair even before the public arrived.
The event also reportedly suffered a series of technical and logistical issues. Power outages affected parts of the venue, causing refrigerated food to spoil as temperatures rose. One of the fair’s Ferris wheels also stopped operating because of the electrical problems, leaving visitors frustrated and raising questions about the event’s organisation.
Adding to the criticism, photos and videos shared across social media appeared to show large areas of the fairgrounds with very few visitors. Images of quiet walkways, nearly empty booths and open spaces quickly spread online, leading many users to mock the event and question Trump’s claims that it had attracted massive crowds.
Despite the criticism, Trump has continued to insist the fair was a success and has rejected suggestions that attendance was disappointing. His latest comments have once again sparked debate online, with supporters praising his confidence while critics pointed to the images and reports that appeared to paint a very different picture of the event.
