Letitia James unleashes fiery response to Trump’s ‘revenge tour’ in wake of mortgage fraud accusations

The federal criminal complaint against Letitia James is baseless and hypocritical, according to her lawyer, who said it’s just another part of Donald Trump’s campaign to get back at people he sees as enemies.
In a heated five-page letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, Letitia James’ lawyer, Abbe David Lowell, dismantled the accusations that James committed mortgage fraud. He pointed out that while there was a paperwork mistake, it wasn’t anything criminal.
The criminal complaint from Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte, which caused a lot of media attention, was based on weak news reports and a selective reading of public documents, Lowell argued.
One key point Lowell raised was that Pulte had zeroed in on a power of attorney document from August 17, 2023, which incorrectly stated that the property would be James’ main home. However, just two weeks earlier, James had clearly told her mortgage broker — in a message written in all capital letters — that “this property WILL NOT be my primary residence.” This was left out of Pulte’s accusations.
Lowell also said that the entire effort is just part of Trump’s plan to get revenge on his political rivals.
Trump has especially targeted James ever since she led a major civil fraud case against him and the Trump Organization, which ended in a $454 million judgment against him.
Lowell said if you look at the full set of documents, you’ll see that the one mistake was just a rushed error in filling out a form, and that apart from attending school elsewhere, James has lived only in Brooklyn. He argued that the criminal complaint is nothing more than a few pages of old and flimsy claims based on media reports, designed purely as the next attack in Trump’s ongoing effort to punish Attorney General James.
