President Donald Trump reportedly became very angry inside the Oval Office as the war involving Iran continued with no clear end in sight. According to people familiar with the situation, the president lashed out in frustration after efforts to bring the conflict under control failed to produce the quick results he had expected.
The Wall Street Journal reported late on Thursday that Trump used harsh language while speaking about Iran’s leaders, reportedly calling them “scumbags” and “lunatics.” Sources also claimed he repeatedly swore during the outburst as he expressed his anger over the ongoing conflict.
According to the report, Trump is becoming increasingly frustrated because the war has lasted much longer than he originally believed it would. He had reportedly expected the fighting to end within a matter of weeks, but instead the conflict has continued, creating growing political and military challenges for his administration.
The prolonged war has also caused concern among some of Trump’s advisers. They reportedly fear the conflict is beginning to dominate his presidency, especially as Americans face rising prices, his public approval ratings continue to fall, and more than a dozen U.S. servicemembers have been killed during the fighting.
The report says Trump is also worried that he may not be able to deliver the lasting peace he promised Americans. After launching military action without approval from Congress, he had reportedly claimed the conflict would last only four or five weeks. However, months later, there is still no clear path to ending the war.
A memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, which had been signed in April, officially came to an end in July after lasting only three months. The breakdown of that agreement has further reduced hopes of reaching a peaceful settlement through negotiations.
People familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal that Trump has recently become much more doubtful that talks with Iran will ever produce a long-term peace deal. One senior administration official reportedly said the president now believes Iran only responds to military force rather than diplomacy.
The same official claimed Trump had entered what was described as “revenge mode” against Tehran, suggesting he now sees stronger military action as the best way to deal with Iran instead of relying on negotiations to end the conflict.
