Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan has warned that Americans should pay close attention to what she believes is happening ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, saying people need to focus on the bigger picture rather than just individual events.
Speaking on MSNBC’s MS NOW with host Nicolle Wallace on Monday, Slotkin reacted to President Donald Trump’s speech last week, where he once again repeated claims that the 2020 presidential election was unfair. Trump said China had interfered in the election and announced that documents connected to those claims had been declassified.
However, the documents released were heavily redacted and mostly contained information that had already been made public. Critics argued that the files did not provide new evidence to support Trump’s long-standing claims of foreign interference or widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election.
During the interview, Slotkin claimed that Trump’s repeated criticism of mail-in voting is part of a wider effort to make Americans lose confidence in the election process. She said she believes the president is following what she described as an “authoritarian playbook,” something she said she has seen happen in other countries.
According to Slotkin, leaders who expect to lose elections sometimes spread false or misleading information about the voting system before votes are even cast. She argued that this can make supporters believe the election was unfair if the results do not go in their favour.
She pointed to Trump’s previous comments, including remarks she said reflected the idea that if his political allies lose, the election system must have been manipulated. Slotkin said she believes this type of message is designed to prepare people to question future election results before voting has even taken place.
Slotkin also warned that, in her view, these actions could lead to attempts to interfere with the election process later this year. She claimed that such situations can sometimes end with leaders declaring that there is a security problem, which they then use as a reason to send military personnel or federal law enforcement officers to polling stations.
She suggested this could include having uniformed officers around voting locations or becoming involved with ballots and voting machines, saying Americans should pay close attention to any developments that might affect public confidence in elections.
The Michigan senator stressed that people should not become distracted by individual statements or isolated incidents. Instead, she urged Americans to look at the overall pattern of events and consider whether there is a broader effort to weaken trust in the country’s democratic process.
Her comments come as political tensions continue to rise ahead of the midterm elections, with debates over election security, voting rules and public confidence expected to remain major issues in the months leading up to Election Day.
